I'm trying to get my computer to connect to the wireless network in my house. It's running Windows XP though and I don't know how to do it

It's never been used on wireless before so if anyone knows, can they show me how to connect to the network?

Thanks

Do you have a wireless adapter?

Generally:
Right click the wireless icon in the system tray and click View Available Wireless Networks. If your network is listed, click on it, enter any appropriate password or encryption key, and hit connect. Done.

If it's not listed, click Advanced. You have to enter the network's SSID and security information manually.

I don't know what a wireless adapter is (I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to computers)

I don't know what the wireless icon looks like either... well I think I might have the one you mean, is it like two computer screens with a red cross by it?

I mean is your computer capable of wireless networking? Is it a laptop with built-in WiFi or a desktop with some sort of WiFi attachment?

Oh that I don't know

I think I need to use this network setup wizard... with the USB flash drive...

Just got to find that though Then I'll know if it's wireless enabled I guess.

Not all computers can connect to a wireless network. It needs a Wi-Fi device to communicate wirelessly.

Is it a laptop?

No it's a desktop.

I don't think it has this Wi-Fi device thingy on it actually...

Now I feel a right idiot

It doesn't matter. I think I can just use a memory stick for what I wanted to do, I just wanted to email some pics from one computer to another.

I have to get the memory stick off my brother first though

Using a memory stick/flash drive to transfer files is way better than setting up a wireless network to do so

The vast majority of desktops are not wireless-enabled. You'd need to buy a USB wireless adapter.

However, it sounds like the desktop is connected to the network. If the laptop is connected to the network as well, you can set up a shared folder and transfer directly between them. As long as both are connected to the network, it doesn't matter if it's by wire or wireless.

That's probably more complicated for you than just using the flash drive though

Yeah that would be much more complicated

I don't know why I didn't think of the memory stick first!
