Wild's equipment catches fire!

"OTTAWA -- The Minnesota Wild have been hot lately, but it was Minnesota's equipment that caught fire Friday and left the NHL team scrambling ahead of its game against the Ottawa Senators.

Much of the team's gear was damaged when a fire broke out in the back of the cube van carrying the equipment from a practice rink to Scotiabank Place, where Minnesota plays the Senators on Saturday night."

Bad news but aren't they a professional team? When I played amateur sports in school even we had 3 backups of kit and equipment.

Most hockey players are extremely attached to their equipment. Plus breaking in new skates sucks in general...but especially when you've got a game.

I wonder if their back up gear was in the van with the regularly used gear.

Well it's not like it's a common thing for vans to catch fire. How often do they transport gear and not have any problems?

My guess is they have back up gear in the home arena. But a lot of players have the same equipment they use for years, so that's gotta suck for them. It would just be a matter of transporting it at last minute. The arenas are pretty far from each other.

why? It's not like this is a common thing. It's back up gear in case a skate blew out or a stick broke. They don't expect vehicles to start on fire. Do you expect them to transport everything separately? Like this van for regular gear and that one for back up gear and that one for the third string gear?

maybe a new trend will develop after this incident!

I don't expect my laptop to break but it's not a good idea to keep a backup of files I wouldn't like to lose (no matter how tiny the percantage of it happening) on my laptop.

Thinking about it now, it would really suck for goalies since they have to get their pads approved before using it in games. I dunno how many sets of pads the average goalie has

but that is more common than a van burning all your gear. Not really the same thing.

I'd guess that laptops break a lot more often than entire teams' equipment gets totally destroyed

But of course backing up anything is a good idea.

the issue isn't really that there is no backup gear, they make millions I'm sure they can easily can new equipment and/or have other stuff to use.


The annoying part is transporting it all at such short notice, adjusting to it, and being pissed off about losing important items you might have been using for years and years.

The whole idea of a backup is 'incase' anything happens to the original, no matter how small the chance of it being lost or destroyed. It's not really a backup if it gets lost or destroyed with the original.
