Why do we root for the underdog? It's a popular theme in books and movies .... just wondering what everyone thinks the reason is.
Do we in someways feel connected? As in relating to him/her?

It stems from the American Revolution. The colonies were underdogs against the mightiest fighting machine of the era. We won; thereby establishing the underdog theory.

It is because Hollywood portrays underdogs as handsome and beautiful people

The underdogs seem more passionate about what they are fighting for and try harder to get it...

or are we talking about this "Underdog"?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

The underdog is sometimes at a disadvantage, not always due to their own fault. I wonder if some people find this disadvantage unfair, and so root for the one less expected to succeed

Not everything's about the Americans you know. Us Brits root for the underdog too, you know!

I think it's because everyone can relate to the imperfection of the underdog, and we all like everyone to be successful. Also, so often the people in authority are portrayed as complete pricks, and it's always good to see them get their comeuppance

Many people are unsure of the outcome of their day to day endeavors. Seeing some poor schmuck with an obvious disadvantage get the girl, the job, the happy ending...I think it's something we wish for ourselves to happen, too.

In the movies the underdog seems to have the odds stacked against him/her. Do you think the reason why it is a popular theme is that maybe we relate to that from time to time and feel that the world is against us?

Its because they always have an underlying story to tell, obstacles they need to over come, having so many things against them...it inspires us, its makes us want to do the same, and well yes we relate better to them then the ones that have everything handed to them.
