I have been thinking long and hard about which laptop to buy and have narrowed it down to a Dell Xps or a Sony Vaio AW series. Which would be the better laptop to buy. What are the pros and cons for each laptop.

Depends on what the specs are for each laptop.

I'd generally go for the XPS. I've never been impressed with the build quality and design on the Vaios.

Really depends on specific models though.

Dell has an Intel core 2 Duo Processor with 4 gig of Ram, vista SP1, 16" 720p HD screen and 512mb ATI radeon grphics card. 250gb hard drive also

The vaio AW is twice the price though. Has bluray,
4gb Ram
500gb HD
Real wide 18.4 inch Full HD entertainment
Full HD 18.4 inch X-black LCD for stunning picture quality
Powerful Intel? Centrino? 2 processor, NVIDIA? graphics and Windows Vista? HomePremium

You're looking at two wildly different types of laptops there. The choice there would depend a lot more on your needs than anything else.

The dells are a good spec and have a reasonable price. The have considerable power too. For the price of the vaio aw I could buy a mac and have a better machine.

I basically only want the laptop for surfing the net and doing the odd application with word or editing the odd website online.

Both of those machines are massive overkill for that IMO.

Why do you want a laptop instead of a desktop?

I am not going to be downloading movies or mp3's on to it. Basically it will be for working.

I previously had a dell inspiron and thought it was kind of slow.

Currently I am using a dell dimension 3100 desktop. It has 2gb ram and does the job but I want a laptop to replace my broken one.

I'd recommend something like the Macbook or XPS M1330 / Studio XPS 13 for you.

The 13" laptops give a great combination of power, price, usability, and portability. If you're using a laptop to supplement a desktop, I'd definitely go for one of these smaller ones.

If you want something a bit larger, consider the M1530 or a 15" Macbook Pro.

I wouldn't go 16" or larger.

I have been used to using laptops for the last 10 years or so. When I broke my laptop about 8 months ago I was lucky I had this desktop in reserve but I am just sick of sitting at a desk all of the time and would like more freedom with a laptop.

If an XPS is too much how about the studio range. They should be sufficient for my needs.

The Studio XPS and XPS laptops and Macbook Pros are, IMO, what you should be looking at. Find a laptop that fits your price and size requirements in those ranges.

Thanks for the advice I'll take note of it when I am buying a laptop. The XPS I mentioned above is really a gaming laptop.
