When a girl says "I don't want to hold you back".... what do you mean?

The now my girlfriend left for a trip right the day after she became my girlfriend. I'm confused because that day she said she would like to be back and me still single, I like her so I popped the question right there. But then when I did she said "really? I don't want to hold you back because I won't be here for a bit".

I'm confused.

It's either an excuse to let you down easy, or she genuinely doesn't believe in long distance relationships.

She asked you? I thought you said she said she wanted you to be single when she got back, not to ask her if she'd be your girlfriend right then. Those are two different things.

Maybe she genuinely means what she says. Perhaps she feels that it would be unfair to you to have to wait for her but she would like you to. Be optimistic

Sounds like she really likes you; but is afraid that you won't wait for her, or will begin to resent her for making you wait, so she made that remark, thereby letting you know that she 'realizes' that for you to make such a sacrifice would be viewd by some as being 'held back, or down' for a while.

But if you genuinely don't mind, then reassure her of this.

She felt like she doesn't want you to go through all the pains of waiting games. "Pain" only if you see it that way though, because some sees waiting games as pain for some non-loving reason.

I've said it and the girl I liked has said it many times too, because we can't be meeting again yet and in separate countries.
