And, it depends on the word "meaning." We should all be happy to hear that Mr Trump is filing suit against big tech. The goal here is to preserve unpopular and political speech. The major social media platforms feel it best on behalf of their users to deny their usage, based on certain opinions. They're acting like publishers vs media platform.

I just find it funny that the excuse the free market types used to justify moral panic outrages for literal decades now 'suddenly' doesn't fly anymore when it's used against them. It's not just '[product] will corrupt our youth', it was also '[store or chain] shouldn't even be selling or promoting this [product] because it will corrupt our youth'. These people are the ones who actively ecnouraged corporations to treat the storefront as a reflection of the publisher and vice versa. "They're acting like publishers vs media platform" because that's literally what the moral panic types have been treating them as for literal decades.

Hi there. I am indeed a "free market" type. I am not a "moral panic type" partly because I've not let you define your terms and I've never used that term about myself. Civil society is crumbling and it is because of moral decline but there simply isn't a call for panic as panic never helps.

About me:

One on the largest umbrella terms I use to describe myself is "classical liberal" as promoted by Hobbes. The US Founders gave us a system that works best under local control, separation of powers, and governance by elected officials. Society most always works best when operated by non-governmental offices in civil society Chiefly The Family (a husband and wife in life-long union) and The Church (which itself is a picture of Marriage: The Bridegroom Jesus and His bride The confessing Body of Believers). In addition to being a Hobbes liberal, I believe in Capitalism. Capitalism offers the most opportunity to the most people and there simply isn't a better system this side of heaven.

I also consider myself to be a social conservative in the vein of William F Buckley and George F Will. Most importantly, I consider myself a Reform Protestant Christian.

Now, back to my earlier comment--

After the midterms the GOP members of Congress (the last conscientious governing party with a soul) need to put forth bills to enact reforms targeting multi-national coorporations and big tech.

In the exact same way Congress broke up Ma Bell back in the 80's

The goal here is to promote competition, to provide the average guy a choice, and to discourage those media platforms from "disappearing" political and religious voices that the prevailing culture finds distasteful.

Shun Trump if you want, but he gets a platform somewhere.

See, in a free society, speech is combated with speech.

This is personal because I've been directly affected. I'm at the TFS instead of Reddit because at Reddit they have a democratic voting system that silences unpopular views.

Pure democracy is a horrible idea. The US Founders knew that.

The question here is, why are you so terribly frightened of Donald Trump (really his supporters) that you promote de-platforming?

**by the way I'm aware Hobbes predates the US**

Which is an argument around whether or not these companies have a controlling share of the market, not free speech.

Those goals are at least somewhat at odds with each other because the only reason the giants are even "disappearing" unpopular views in the first place is to make their platform more appealing to those who give them money. Namely advertisers. It's kind of hard to promote competition while simultaneously scaring off a large amount of your potential revenue, as the moral panic types proved to great effect over the decades.

"Promote de-platforming"? No. I never mentioned which way I felt about that. For the record, it bounces somewhere between tired indifference at the state of affairs and slightly miffed at the Republican Party that helped promote this mindset in the free market in the first place crying foul when it negatively impacts them for the first time while everyone else just had to accept this situation for years, if not decades, already.

Even our very own POTUS46 throw shade on other countries when they restrict their internet. Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden have both spoken out against this practice when it happens abroad.

Of course, since big tech has been siding with the Dems, Biden all about banning people for "misinformation" about COVID, Trump, the 2020 election, or whatever else subject now considered verboten.

Anyone can see that if only a small number of groups have a lock on net services, then weaponize their infrastructure against certain voices, that's anything but free speech.

You can only manipulate the fabric of realty for so long before it snaps. Danger danger danger!!

Oh you mean the one that decries masks while Delta ravishes his state?

I’m glad I don’t live in Florida.

Yeah we’re technically in the United States but as the cultural divide continues it’s clear “we” are not United. Not just for Covid but for everything be it education policy or environmental regulation or tax rates or policy affecting businesses or policing. Same goes for civil rights same goes for attitudes about the scope of the federal government or the role of media or the role of religion and family.

It’s obvious we’re not on the same page.

I admit that I don’t enjoy hot Florida summers (when I’m there) but it’s nice we have a governor who stands up for what’s right. And he’s a Navy vet!!

Of what? Moral panic over the marketplace that resulted in action? What happened to the Dixie Chicks for criticizing the Iraq War, and creation of the ESRB come tom mind for starters.

Ah--lets add some more to your list

The Comics Code Authority
The Motion Picture Association film rating system
Television content rating system
Music Lyric Parental Advisory

top-shelf plastic bag x mag quarantine

Most promote obscenity/porn regulation and most are about self regulation--meaning the governing agency often sets the standard and then lets the content maker label themselves so the seller can ensure parents little Jimmy isn't being corrupted.

My point here is that the surviving portion of the Communications Decency Act has been abused by big tech. I don't know exactly how Section 230 can be retooled but indeed it must AND/OR breaking up the multi-national media providers.

It is very possible to do that at the same time allowing for competition > T-Mobile>Verizon>AT&T>

What does the Republican Party stand for?

Rational thought and scientific inquiry.

Over-educated noisy opinion makers are telling us that it is polite to de-couple sex and gender. Chaos much? No thanks!!

This is an elaborate and caustic hoax which will be perpetrated on the youth. Danger Danger Danger!!!

To solve this, make no change and stick with rational thought. When your wife gives birth, you know the gender/sex of your child by checking for the stem on the apple. No stem, it's a girl. Stem, future man.

Don't overthink it. Shut down angry purple-haired women and their dumb ideas!

Of course, the fact that content is user-generated and not controlled completely by the media platform means that the only way in which a platform could comply with any sort of standards or ratings system would be with the ability to separate or outright remove people from the rest of their ecosystem. Which requires curation. Which gets us right back to the situation we have already, (especially the self-regulated part), where we have companies self-curating their own ecosystems.
