Perhaps the USA is, with our overexpenditure at the expense of the underprivileged, but I don't think Western Civilization is specifically. Democracy is here to stay.
Not that it really matters in the long run the way we are all burning this planet.
As I said to Chaski I think for this discussion to be worthwhile we should clear up some issues first, but the highlighted comment is interesting. It certainly seems to encapsulate something of the western
zeitgeist. Whether it is a good sign that a particular culture thinks its existence is killing the planet or not is a point we could probably discuss a bit later.
Also, as you have noted western debt levels are unsustainable by and large. At some point a major economic shift will probably be required. Although, as that will reign in the number of women who marry the state it will actually benefit western nations considerably.
I suspect the anti-white or white guilt thing will have to be addressed too at some point. This may fit in with the broader "we are killing the entire world" idea, but I think it probably requires its own separate analysis.
And then there is democracy. This merits discussion too I think. I believe democracy requires certain things to function - a large pool of voters who are not self centred and egotistical, overly pampered, self important, far too privileged and sheltered from reality would be just one of them. Government accountability and transparency would be another. Voters who understand, take an interest in and have reasonable (if disparate) political opinions would be another. Voters who are aware of the fact that the world is not a nice, safe, happy, friendly, tolerant place would be a crucial one. I am unsure that many if any western nations (EU, UK, USA, NZ and Australia) necessarily meet those criteria though. So this should be something we consider too if we are going to discuss the west's continued viability.
I have little doubt that the west is in its death throes, if not dead. I could be wrong though.
