Best advice I can give is to know exactly what you want before you go in. Do you want a course that focusses on web design or do you want a course that will teach you HTML/XML? The two are completely different, and one doesn't lead to the other. I've seen websites made by people proficient in HTML which sucked ass, and sites made in dreamweaver by someone with limited HTML knowledge that were usable and attractive.

So in judging a course, always ask the question - how much time is spent on learning HTML, and how much time is spent on learning how to design a well crafted webpage.

Then it's probably best to find a course using Macromedia Dreamweaver, and a design and ergonomics course. Together they should help you put together functional, usable, friendly webpages with a minimum of technical knowledge required.

I learned on my own and then I took a small course on flash animation and then took one on dreamweaver, photoshop, flash, ext. And courses are the best. You get to experience things for you're self and if you have trouble you can talk to the teacher and you'll understand things much better.

Agreed oreo.

I started learning on my own, for about a year, but because it was on my own it was difficult.

When you learn on courses you pay more attention and are given practical exercises.

Be warned though, even xhtml/css can take years to 'master'

Hey, it depends on your ability, mean i had a good understanding of computers and thought stuff it might aswell do somthing with computers, so i did!

I got my own web design company now. My advice to you is to learn with dreamweaver MX because its the best around(or cs3) and learn graphic design loads of people i know say its about html and coding which is a big part of it, but not a all of it. With dreamweaver its very much like drawing. You would need to understand photoshop cs3 or similar drawing kit. With websites now(web 2.0 style) half the battle is graphic design. If you need advice Message me.
