I've always wanted to post this...

I talk to people about how possible it really is that the earth will just get demolished by some unknown scenario, and people always say "Like what?" Then I just stand there with a stupid look on my face.

But, occasionally I'll say something like:

Well, it's possible another alien race will come to earth who are far more technologically advanced than we are. Yet in their history they lacked civil rights movements the way our planet has, so they have no problem whatsoever with destroying any species from existence. This alien lifeform could destroy us and take over as if nothing really happened.

Obviously this sounds like something straight out of a Sci-fi movie. It doesn't seem likely, but to me it seems much more likely then many other scenarioes that have been proposed.

So, what other ways could the world end?

Ooh yeahh...if that erupts we're all screwed lol.

Or that LHC machine under Switzerland and France could go all wrong. Ever heard of that?

Ya, create a black hole and suck everything in our solar system into it Fun to think about, but I really doubt we've got the power to destroy entire galaxies...

Yeah haha well the black holes are supposed to dissolve within a millisecond of being created. But there was like a law suit filed against those scientists.

The most likely event by far, after volcanoes, is indeed an asteroid/comet.
It doesn't even need to impact us, only pass near enough to disturb either our orbit or the moon's. It's passage could easily disrupt the tectonic plates, setting off literally THOUSANDS of massive volcano's, or dropping the moon on our heads, that'd have to hurt!
Even a comet's tail of sufficient size could strip the atmosphere from around us, or contaminate it to the point of toxicity.
We wouldn't have to move far in our orbit to make life untenable, a few degrees either way and we're right-royally screwed.
But in my book, the way we'll actually experience the destruction of "life as we know it", is flooding, and that's real, now, and our great-grandkids won't know a world much like ours.
IMO.

there enough water for that to happen?

Enough to cover most of the land masses, but leaving about a third, mostly mountainous regions. Many forget that as the earth and atmosphere warm, so does the sea, and all that water actually expands, and there's more than a few bucketfuls out there!
Even a few percent expansion will drive the sea-level metres higher!
We have NO idea if this is a warming event in the natural cycle, or brought on OR affected by ourselves, all we know for sure is that it IS happening, and we have NO IDEA where it will end.
Those are the simple facts.

If I type the letter "Y" three times in a single post then we'll all be dead within 24 hours..

Of course there's never going to be a case where I'd type the letter "Y" three times in a single post, because the letter "Y" isn't that common.

Oh, s***.. We've all got less than a day to live.
