I get that without it the only ones with a voice would be the states with the largest cities or population . States like New Mexico wouldn't even be a step child when it comes to things like funding for education or anything important .

There aren't many Americans who even have an inkling that the Electoral college even exists . And many of those that do, seem to believe that the electors have to vote the way the popular vote goes in the state they represent . And generally they do. Most of the time.

Now these electors are not elected by the people to be electors. They usually they be state elected officials or party leaders . Or just someone with a strong affiliation to a candidate running for president.
If a candidate was inclined to appreciate corruption that last part is made to order.
It's not a crime if one or all the electors in a state decide not to cast their vote with the popular vote . Its expected they will but they can vote anyway they choose.
Now they be politicians or at the very least wanna be politicians . Nothing but their morals are stopping them from voting for the highest bidder .

I think a lot of states actually have laws that the electoral college must vote in accordance with the popular vote.
However, I think in many cases the consequences are weak enough, and if really challenged it probably go to the supreme court.

If I'm not mistaken there are a few cases where they voted against what "should have been", but since it didn't affect the final outcome, states didn't pursue it.

The Electoral College...

Now this is a huge topic.

I'm going to leave my response to this question:

Should everyone, every citizen, in the USA have an equal vote... one person - one vote?

> if the answer to that is "yes" then the Electoral College system is outdated, F__ked up and should be done away with.

> if the answer to that is "no", then what is the scale... how do "we" determine which Americans have a more valuable (i.e. more important) vote?

I 'll answer with a question.
Shouldn't everyone, every citizen, in the USA of voting age get off their sofa's and vote ? If they were to do this , then and only then could the question of , in part , " have an equal vote... one person - one vote?" be addressed.

I think it should be the law that every legal citizen of voting age in the USA must vote.

A law... how would you enforce it Chaski?

Oh I don't know... maybe some combination of...

> If you don't vote your driver's license is revoked.

and/or

> If you don't vote you don't get to count your exemptions and/or deductions on your tax filing thus owe more money.

and/or

> If you don't vote you get a $1000 fine (or more).

and/or

> Something else.

But Chaski, what if the person really just doesn't care?

Ok... there should be a box on the ballot that reads: "EASY QUICK I DO NOT GIVE A s*** SO VOTE FOR NO ONE AND NOTHING". So... you go in to vote (or do it via mail) and check the box, put the ballot in the mail, and go about your I don't give a s*** way of life.... but you "voted".

PS
I also think every U.S. citizen should have military service. EVERYONE. Ok... if a person is essentially mentally incapable that might be an exception. But even a person who is paralyzed? Yes. Teach them how to use a computer.... etc. But what about a person in prison on death row? He can lick stamps... something useful.

I know a person 41 years old that voted for Trump. When I ask the simple question of Why did you vote for Trump ? His answer was " because he's a businessman and America needs to start making money " I ask him what about all Trumps bankruptcies, his response was , " huh ?
I ask him what about the 1500 or so breach of contract law suits against Trump brought by companies that had contracted to do jobs and when they went to collect Trump wouldn't pay up ? his response was "huh ?" What about his bogus university . " huh?"
By now I'm thinking maybe some people should be tied to their sofas on election day . One more for the hell of it. What did he think when Trump promised o build a wall and make Mexico pay for it, how can one country force another country into doing something with out first making war and winning that war on the other country ? "huh?"
Okay, lets say your closet neighbor has an apple tree, and has always grumbled but let it pass when your kids go over into their yard and take apples. But one day they say' NO MORE' zero tolerance. And their answer is that they are going to build a fence and you are going to foot the bill .He woke up then. He knows that it's a known fact that if I don't want the neighbors livestock , or kids or pets on my property I am responsible for building a fence . Then he looks confused and asks what's that got to do with what we were talking about ?
I'm wondering if maybe some people shouldn't be tied down to their sofas on election day .
Is it even conceivable to think that this is possible " everyone, every citizen, in the USA have an equal vote... one person - one vote?"

I s*** you not , I really did exchange these words with a 41 year old American voter.

I totally believe you, mostly because I've had very similar conversations.

Let me note that in my not even remotely humble opinion, the most important things to teach our children in school are: reading, writing, basic arithmetic and the constitution of the USA. In fact, I would put the Constitution of the USA before reading, writing and arithmetic (hey, our ancestors taught by word of mouth).

Simple rule: You do not get out of 3rd grade until you understand the basics of the Constitution (it really isn't that complicated)... and then every year after you MUST demonstrate a basic knowledge of our Constitution.... from 3rd grade until.... until whenever you end your education... I don't care if you are a medical student, real estate agent, plumber, brick layer... you NEVER advance in any way until you demonstrate a basic understanding of the Constitution.... over and over and over and over again.

So you might not even be able to read a menu and order "surf n turf" but you know exactly what it takes to repeal an amendment.... you might not be able to understand that 1 apple plus 1 apple = 2 apples, but you understand your 5th amendment rights.... etc... etc... etc...

We should start with when we send our young kids to school to learn how to read and write and cipher. They learn to read using a book that is age appropriate about the responsibilities of being an American in America and why freedom isn't free. And with each passing grade level the book about being a reasonable American citizen becomes a bit more detailed on the topic . Instead of " see d*** run ,See Jane run See d*** and Jane run after Spot see Sally watch d*** and Spot run away from Jane .

Yes... I sort of addressed that in another post... You wrote it more directly... succinctly.

See d*** try to violate Jane's rights

....and watch Sally and Bob 1st put d*** in his place

...and then turn to Jane and say "get with the damn program! We've been teaching you your rights and responsibilities since you could walk! What the Hell!"

When I started this thread my goal was to ask for thoughts on how easy would it be for someone inclined towards corruption, to buy off the 500 plus electors. Well maybe not all of them , how about just the ones from New York and California .

Even as a kid reading about a d*** , a Jane , a Spot and a Sally just sounded wrong . I guess I was , am a natural born smart mouth , I remember asking the teacher something along the lines of whys d*** and his Spot always running after Jane and why does Sally care? The teachers response was she picked up her pointer and smacked me across my back. telling me I was lucky she wasn't washing my mouth with soap.

I was in Key West Florida roughly 30 years ago, and saw a woman wearing a T-Shirt with a series of stick figures... female... the lines turning from black lines to bright red lines... and a sort of stick figure sun in the sky... the caption read "See Jane, See Jane Burn, Burn Jane Burn"

I don't know who was the biggest spot making d*** . d*** or Jane in those readers.
