The unemployment rate in USA at 8.5%.

Ok... assuming that this is correct, or even put it back at 9% unemployment.
That would mean employment is at 91-91.5%.

It is probably a poor comparison, but in most schools in the USA that would be an "A".

I think that it was up to 24.75% during the depression...or 75% of the population employed... a "C".

I am not saying that the unemployment is acceptable, nor that we should not try to do better, but a low "A" isn't too bad... isn't "doom & gloom"...

Or is it?

(Discuss... and feel free to hammer me or my above comparison.)

Also maybe not a good comparison, but I have seen obesity rates for people the USA ranging from 30% to 68%. The assumption is that this is unhealthy.

Using my (perhaps stupid) classroom example (depending on the study) in terms of health America is getting a "C", "D" or "F".

Again... the comparison would suggest that the unemployment rate is really not that bad...

I don't think the comparisons really fit, 9% on a term paper you can let slip but in real terms it means almost 1 in 10 people are likely struggling financially and having a really hard time.

Yes it could be worse...but it still sucks.

We can have 100% employment in a mixed market economy, The communists are gone. The reason is that GOD can, like Obama CAN.

I think the best thing you mentioned is that it could be worse. It can always be worse, so as a country we have to keep pushing through. Collectively I am sure we would like to see the unemployment rate be 0%, but in an imperfect world we will never see that happen.

Also, you comparison isn't stupid, it is a way to show others what it really means. If you can achieve an A in a class, all it takes is a little hard work, and you can get that A+. Maybe even a little extra credit.

Just keep putting our heads down and keep on the daily grind.

I'd be much happier with a 4-5% rate.

Still not enough jobs, and certainly not enough jobs with living wages.
