I think different people measure patriotism in different ways, so it's kind of hard to say, really.

I mean I don't have a flag hanging in my bedroom but I'm happy to live in the country I do.

lol, true.

This idea that you're doing something wrong by disagreeing with certain American policies is ridiculous, and is ultimately what leads to people being imprisoned or beaten for speaking ill of their government in Countries like China. I'm personally proud of the fact that this isn't China in that regard, and I think it's something that should be more appreciated, or at least mentioned when promotion of blind patriotism starts rearing it's ugly head.

Yeah, I think the definition of patriotism needs to be better understood. Patriotism is not blindly saying "My country is the best in the whole world", and if you don't, you're accused of being some kind of traitor.

One definition of Patriotism: "Devotion to a community as opposed to devotion to one's individual interests without considering what is good for the community." So if you are concerned about, and/or work toward improving the well being of people in your community, you are patriotic. But by this definition, not many people are patriotic. How many people volunteer, or donate to US charities?

I wouldn't really much expect much patriotism from Americans since most of them don't really know how lucky they are to have been born in America.

Exactly. They could have been born in Thailand or Iraq. Imagine if you were a women and you were born in China.

So I'm supposed to be proud of my country because the current leaders of said country have in the space of 8 years managed to utterly destroy all of the goodwill that the United States had built up around the world over the past 220+ years?

I'm supposed to be proud of country that while chastizing and criticizing and accusing other countries of torturing and illegally detaining people was at the same time systematically setting up a series of secret prisons in which torture was not only encouraged, but was official policy?

Those two things alone make me ashamed to be an American.
