Would the whistleblower need to remain anonymous?

Yes. The whistleblower can remain anonymous and should remains anonymous.

The whistleblower "needs" to remain anonymous if that is the what the whistleblower believes is necessary.

The whistleblower, if his/her identity was made public, would potentially face a variety of threats including threats to her/his life by Trump followers. It only takes one extreme nut.

But you know this.


Are there protections?

Yes. The whistleblower is protected by U.S. federal law.

And you know this as well.

What are the reasons for the whistleblower to NOT remain anonymous?

There is now plenty of evidence, and even first-hand knowledge of the claims and concerns.

Side note:

1. Based on our legal system a person has the right to be confronted by their accuser. That is, a defendant in a criminal trial has the right to know who is accusing him/her of a crime.

This does NOT mean that a person gets to know who a whistleblower is PRIOR to trial.

2. This also applies to "anonymous" witnesses, witnesses in "protective custody", undercover sources, undercover law enforcement officers... and as our wondrous lord and savior Cadet Bones Spurs calls them Flippers... etc

This thing about saying that the identity of a whistleblower should be made public is exactly the kind of thing that organized crime groups want.

I would like to know my accuser.

Otherwise, it would be like a keyboard warrior trolling on the net.

Does it matter anymore?

After the Sondland reversal it’s pretty much factual that there was quid quo pro at this point. Which is all the whistleblower was saying. And several others who have testified since then, whose identities ARE known.

Now the GOP defense will move from “no quid quo pro” to “not impeachable to do”...

Then Congress has no reason to delay. Hold the vote and start the actual impeachment. Be done with it.
