There is perhaps more suffering in milk, cheese and egg consumption than meat consumption, therefore choosing to be vegetarian (for ethical reasons) is not logical. Abstaining from ALL animal products is the ethical stance that gives basic minimal respect due to sentient beings. The dairy cow; riddled with pain as a result of her exploitation, sexually abused, and killed to be eaten typically at around 5 years of her otherwise 20- 25 year lifespan, epitomizes a culture of dominating those physically weaker than ourselves. Talk about taking advantage of someone?s good nature! The species that humans enslave for ?food? are peaceful and gentle; something to emulate, not to exploit.

The oddest thing is that the majority of wimmin do not equate the drinking of calf food and how a mother cow produces it with their own experiences of pregnancy and lactation.

As we see here on TFS, there is a sustained effort to regard humans as not being animals - it is a major disconnect.

However, as much as we may be unique in other ways, biologically our bodies are mammalian - we ~are~ mammals, we ~are~ great apes - as much as many of us want to deny this, it is a fact.

If we equate ourselves with being animals(not got a problem with that, not sure i agree though) we must accept we have animal instincts. One of the main instinct of any animal is to insure its survival by any means possible. It doesn't matter if it's to the detriment of another species, self survival is the name of the game if we are animals. I can't think of any other animal that gives a rats a** about a species that is not its own. Why should we,as animals, act differently? What benefit would it give an animal to care?

Hi,

Your post misses this important point which I made: "as much as we may be unique in other ways..." Human beings have the ability to construct and abide by ethical principles.

We can think of that as some burden - and I think many want to, especially those who wish that they could do literally what they felt like doing.

Isn't the point that we ~can~ give a rat's a** and we assume that nonhuman animals are not in that position at the moment?

In regards to being a species of animal, what is there to agree/disagree with? How would you class humans if not animal?

I agree, I don't know any other animal who would go to such extremes to ensure the survival of other species either. I don't know any other animal who would enslave another for their own pleasure either though. Humans are capable of many things other animals aren't, then again, can humans soar like an eagle? Swim like a dolphin? Hear through their feet like an elephant?

I know we can give a rats ass, but the point is, what benifit does it bring to our species. If we are animals, why should we care?

The fundamental point is that we do not have to assess things purely in terms of the benefit of our species, just as some of us no longer view issues in terms of the benefits to our own social class, gender or race.

Sometimes doing what's right amounts to thinking wider. We can think beyond the species barrier and we can cast our moral interests over it, so to speak.

Indeed, we already do that in respect of animal welfare legislation which regulates how we use nonhuman animals - because of who they are, few of us believe we can do whatever we want to nonhuman animals; few of us believe we can treat them as if they were merely another aspect of property like DVDs etc.

Nonhuman animals are in the unique position of being sentient property, this is precisely why nation after nation does not enact law after law about DVD, CD or plant welfare because they cannot suffer.

What has that got to do with feminism?

Feminism is about equality of humans regardless of gender. Or would you say that socialism invokes that all animals should be equal with humans?

If we don't have to assess things in terms of benifit to our species. And we are to apply a moral value to everything we do. And we can apply critical thought to species barriers.
Doesn't that make us fundamentaly "more" than animals.

Ah, the ants "farming" aphids example! It does say that there is mutual benefit for both species due to this interaction.

It is hard to see how most nonhuman animals benefit from being used by humans, unless we claim that being deliberately bred into existence to be exploited and killed can be said to be a "benefit." How does it benefit elephants to be used in circuses, etc?
