The tax system, wherever it's from, you pay whatever % and the next guy pays the same %. But it doesn't seem to be that way.

If your chart is valid ( any info on who or where it came from ?)then what's stopping our elected officials from seeing and fixing the problem ? I mean ,if the average voter can pull up the information why don't politicians?

I pay taxes and cannot claim my medical expenses unless they total $8500. The tax preparer says it is that high because I am head of household.

According to the article:

Quote:
(This is not true, of course. Many poor and elderly Americans pay no federal income tax, but they pay plenty of other taxes.)

Every time I hear that 50% of the population doesn't pay taxes. THAT is in relation to INCOME TAX. So it's really unfair to say that they pay other taxes simply to disclaim that "50 percent of the population don't pay taxes." It's talking about two different things. Apples and Oranges. Income taxes versus other non-income taxes.

Also, these are state imposed taxes, NOT federal taxes.

FL has no state tax, but NY has state tax. FL taxes on certain food items, GA doesn't tax food items.

Be angry sure, but be angry at the right people and towards the right things.

I also have to say that those statistics are being mis-interpreted by some posters on this thread. What the chart is showing is the ratio of taxes to a families income. It is NOT saying that a poor person pays twice as much in taxes a rich person, it's showing you how much of their income is being USED to pay taxes. Simple mathematics can prove this.

For example:

Family Poor makes 30,000 a year.
Family Poor owns 3000 square foot home and pays property taxes of $1500 in FL

1500/30000 = 5%

Family Rich Makes 60,000 a year
Family Rich also owns 3000 square foot home and pays property taxes of $1500 in FL. (They are neighbors)

1500/60000 = 2.5%

And then people simply look at the percentages and go crazy screaming how the rich don't pay nearly as much as the poor. They paid the same amount, it's just that the taxes represent a smaller portion a rich families income versus a poor families.

Saying that the wealthy are not paying their fair share is misguided.

How is it fair that the poor spend more of their income on taxes and the wealthy not?

So what you are saying is that we punish (tax) the wealthy more because they have taken advantage of the opportunity to earn more money?

How much is Income Tax in America? Those figures seem awfully low. Particularly if that includes other taxes.

Also does that include sales tax? In which case poorer people are bound to pay more as they, on average, spend a higher proportion of their income than richer people do, therefore a higher proportion of sales tax.

Here in Washington state we have no personal income tax. So according to the chart the taxes that we pay are for federal and a very high sales tax. The sales tax in most areas of Washington are above 8%. There is no sales tax on most foods. If you go to a restraurant fast food joint etc sales tax is added.

I'm saying that we need to make the percentages more even. Up or down as the economy requires.
