The congress already mandated certain levels of spending. They can't turn around and say that you can't borrow in order to carry out their wishes. If they don't raise the debt ceiling, Obama will have to choose if he wants to ignore what congress already said should be spent or ignore what congress says is the most they want to borrow. Either way, he would have to ignore one of Congress' instructions.

Interesting!
I heard on NPR an apology sounded about right.
The speaker said something like:
I can have an argument and discussion with my daughters over their credit card expenditures but the DEBT STILL HAS TO BE PAID!

The pubs need to do the right thing here.
The argument & discussion is for later.

Except that's not what the debate is about. Its not at all like pay off your credit card. Its more like getting more credit cards to continue spending.

Plus the 14th amendment section 4 was primarily about establishing which debts were to be paid after the Civil War. (i.e. the foreign debts racked up by the south were not included).

There's also that related discussion with the daughters regarding controlling their spending so the debt can be repaid and not run up repeatedly bringing the same bad result over and over. That may be where the dems "need to do the right thing here".

The slew of Dems that populate the House and Senate (..let's ignore the White House, for now...) have proven themselves incapable of considering what it is you are proposing. Theirs is an attitude of "we have to spend more, if we are going to see any improvement," and that is an attitude that is completely out of place.

Wrong. Debt not borrow.
This is to cover what has already been spent.

That discussion is for later (and it must include the just as responsible pubs).
Right now we must raise the ceiling to pay the debt before sending the country (closely followed by the global economies).

Any other time (preferably now) we can continue the argument of how much of austerity gets hammered on the voiceless, powerless poor & middle-class and how much should be funded by the wealthy who have not seen a decline in revenue for the most part but actually have seen a widening between them & the rest of us.

According to the Republicans, as they have conditionally tied both.

But Geithner is just saying money is needed to make the minimum payment on the current credit card.

Not true. The dems also recognize how bad the economy inherited from Bush (remember medicare to all regardless of need, and both wars have been borrowed money & not financed).

The argument is were the cuts come from, how deep, & why the wealthy are being left off the table by the pubs!

Do you guys hear some sort of echo in the room? Maybe it's just the buzzing of the flys coming in from the open windows...?

Hey, ya know? There is a nice sand pile near your house you can go and stick your head into!!!
Some people just cover their ears when they hear things they don't want to hear!

BS! It has to be part of the discussion. Your example using the "daughters" is ridiculous. We pay the overspending by the federal government. We have every right to demand fiscal responsibility along with the mandatory taxes the dems propose. To do less is irresponsible.

Your voiceless, powerless poor & middle class will never be abandoned. Not even by the conservatives whom you find so distasteful. Your comment is pure BS.

Demand away, and we will do the same towards our beliefs. THAT IS the correct & right way for this debate.
But do not endanger all with this politically motivated nonsense that you are doing something by not paying the bills owed!

they need to figure out something fast.

we are continuing to sink, with no light at the end of the tunnel.

the government wants to cut spending, yet they cut in the wrong places and now want to do these airstrikes in Libya. not exactly a recipe for success, damn near wanting to start another war.

we'll all see what goes down come next election.
