My boyfriend hates the word 'craft' and whenever I say I'm doing craft, he instantly visualises something that's not at all worthwhile, such as knitting toilet paper cosies or putting glitter on popsticks- something to just waste my time, rather than what I'm actually doing, things like miniature sculpture, sewing, learning new skills, etc.

At first I thought he was crazy, but lately I've been thinking he's right, I really shouldn't just lump it all together to 'craft'.

Do you agree that the word 'craft' has a bad image?

Is there a way to get around this?

Well sure, call it by what you're specifically doing.

I do think 'craft' has a bad image, but it's not by any fault of it's own...it's just that we've diminished it to mean those little pointless things rather than the all encompassing meaning.

Maybe kids ruined it for us.

Craft just means "to build". One can build anything, from a house, to a glittery Popsicle stick. So yeah, the term is probably too broad, but at the same time, I don't think it's accurate to assume that all crafts are useless wastes of time.

Perhaps instead of uttering the word "craft" you should instead replace it with the word "croft." If he's ever seen the movie Tomb Raider with Lara Croft it should remind him of Angelina Jolie or the video game. He will ultimately feel better about the word "craft" because it sounds similar to "croft".

mm, I should say "I want to do some embroidery this weekend" rather than 'craft'.

An art, trade, or occupation requiring special skill, especially manual skill: the craft of a mason.
Skill; dexterity: The silversmith worked with great craft.
The members of a trade or profession collectively; a guild.

Doesn't sound like something to be scoffed at. Arts and Crafts for children may have given it a bad rap.
