I know absolutely SFA about the NFL etc. With that out of the way have any of you blokes heard of Jordan Mailata and if so what do you think about his potential as an NFL player? Also, what are your thoughts on Michael d***son?
I had never heard either name, so I had to google them. So, obviously neither is well known on a national scale for those who follow the NFL.
That being said, after reading up on them:
Jordan Mailata was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 7th round, with about a 50% chance of making the team, which he did. He was drafted as an offensive lineman, whose job it is to block defenders from the player who has the ball (be it the quarterback throwing the ball or the running back running with the ball). He has zero experience in American football or even knowledge on how to play the game, so it will take several years before he can make an impact. He was obviously drafted for his physical makeup and natural skills. OLs must be big and strong enough to block 250-300 pound defenders and be quick and nimble at the feet to position themselves quickly in planting blocks.
Michael d***son was drafted in the 5th round as a punter by the Seattle Seahawks. A punter is the least active position in the sport, so it is extremely rare for one to be drafted that high. Obviously they view him as potentially one of the best, and it has apparently been showing, as he is in the top 5 in the NFL in several punting categories (yardage, net yardage (after the return - dependent on punt “hang time”), and placement). He will likely be playing for a long time. He reminds me of Darren Bennett, an Australian Rules Football player that played for the San Diego Chargers in the 1990s (and also did very well).
