What do you mean part of the trick? Yes, they were clones. You saw them all at the very end. Also, you saw one of them examined. The same one that the other magician was framed for.

Yeah they were really clones! That was the trick. You could tell because before they showed the clones at the end, they showed the field of tophats which got cloned all the times they tested the machine earlier. That's why no one could go backstage and he had blind workers. He didn't want anyone to see what he was doing. That movie was awesome.
