I was stunned today when i found out.

The American Government is planning (and will eventually) to build a physical wall on the US - Mexican border spanning 700 miles end to end.

How hypocritical, the land of the free forcing people to keep out. How is it any different to the berlin wall!

Sure enough illegal immigration into america is a problem, but by building a wall, that will do no good for international relations between the two nations and in effect just create conflict.

Opinions?

The Berlin wall was built to keep people *in* the country in which it was built.

Besides, the US is not planning on building a wall. A single Congressmen (there are 535 Congressmen) proposed it. It's not going to happen. Congressmen propose stupid stuff all the time that never happens. This kind of thing would never have a prayer of passing.. talking about it is just a PR stunt to drum up support among voters and make noise.

i hope not, call me a left wing, communist, socialist, down fall of society anarchist (or whatever right wing semi-racists say) but building walls to seperate people, is never a good idea

There's already a long stretch of two-layer fence along the border in California.

Did you know that the Mexican government provides people with maps and instructions on the best places to illegally emigrate to the US? They *actively encourage* illegal immigration. Mexico's government is so pathetic and corrupt it's unbelievable.

actually yeah thats quite bad.

I find it quite ironic that travelling to america from canada and vice versa is relatively simple.

yet from mexico to america is the opposite!

Actually traveling back and forth to Mexico is pretty simple and very similar to traveling back and forth to Canada. I've done both.

You walk or drive through the customs stations. They check your citizenship, ask you a few questions, and send you on your way.

It only gets complicated and weird if you're trying to illegally enter a country by skipping the whole border patrol/customs thing.

i meant like people from canada and mexico entering america.

Over here you can just drive everywhere all over europe (except switzerland) absolutely freely cos of being in the EU, i thought it would be a similar thing with the Us, Canada and Mexico being in NAFTA which is the equivalent of the EU unless i'm mistaken

Not remotely.

NAFTA is a trade agreement. Nothing more.

The EU is a confederation of nations to share a currency and a number of governmental regulatory bodies, laws, etc.

they weren't illegal in the sense that there was no legal system in "the new world" at that time.

However effectively they are very similar, coming to america for whatever reason, economy, religion, better standard of life etc.

They were immigrants, absolutely.

They were not illegal immigrants.

The Eu is a trade agreement as well as those areas you mentioned.

Pilgrams happened when land wasnt owned in the wests idea of owner ship... so that ok there.. the physical wall will have to be 20ft high t have any effect.. (great wall of china).

Mexico seems like a nice country i have had a few dealings with them in my time, and my ex girl friend is mexican, and she told me stories of how americans take them for granted holidays (cacun) etc.

But what makes me laugh is the pirating trade there.. say you bought windows Xp.. it would be pirate version.. but it comes with a help line and if it doesnt work they would give you another one or your money back (mexico city this is in).

Mexico is a beautiful place but needs a new direction. Maybe america should help them instead of buildiing a wall?? After al, they dictate to countries what to do.. or isnt there oil there??
