Final
The Toronto Blue Jays swept the Red Sox in dramatic fashion Wednesday night. And now the Yankees are 1 1/2 games out of first-place in the AL East.
The Blue Jays dominated the first two games of this three-game series by demonstrating their solid pitching and offensive power. Wednesday might was no different as the Blue Jays swept away the Red Sox with a blowout victory.
It was a good pitching matchup between rookie Clay Buchholtz and Jesse Litsch (6-9). But a key error by the rookie caused the Red Sox to lose their fourth consecutive game.
Toronto was down 1-0, but they quickly grabbed the lead for good in the fifth. Grgg Zaun led off with a double. Adam Lind followed with a single and an a infield single by Russ Adams scored Zaun to tie the game at 1-1.
With two on and nobody out, an infield single by Ray Olmedo scored Lind for a 2-1 lead. A throwing error by Buchholtz put the Blue Jays in scoring position, but failed to capitalize.
Jesse Litsche was outstanding after giving up the solo home run to J.D. Drew in the fifth. Litsche gave way to Casey Janssen, Scott Downs, and Jeremy Accardo. The threesome combined to pitch a scoreless eighth.
The Blue Jays blew the game wide open in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two out, Russ Adams hit a towering grand slam home run off of Jonathan Papelbon to give them a 6-1 lead.
Jeremy Accaro pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the deal.
Russ Adams and Gregg Zaun combined to go 3-for-7 with 3 runs and 5 RBIs on the night.
