We need a reset. Some form of Apocalypse where Technology is rendered useless. It has made us lazy and stupid and undoubtedly many other bad traits that will be our undoing.

I've used a computer since I was 11 (I'm 43 now) and I'm now moving in the opposite direction along with many other people in that I use a computer less and less with each day. I used to think I just had less to do on the computer or that I did most of it on my phone so didn't need to turn my laptops on but no, as I think about it more it is a conscious decision to use tech less and return to being "human" and interacting with other humans on a personal level.

bebo? jesus Cole is this the 90s?

Vinyl is on the rise. I even read recently that Cassette Tapes are making a massive comeback. "Dumb" phones are also on the increase with sales in % far exceeding smartphone sales which are on the decline.

Technology is Ok in it's place, but I don't like to be wholly dependent on it for something critical.

I also don't like the way that it has seeped it's way in to almost every aspect of life. And all that is technology is information. And that information can be (and is) used in shady to criminal ways.

I think that is the majority of my posts in this thread, to point out how dependent we are, and how invasive it can be - and how dangerous either of those situations are.
It's the subtle "How to boil a frog" directions.

I'm a proud flip-phone carrying member of the Wannabe Luddites Club!
- and that's only because my work requires me to be on call and available.
- I work in the tech profession, ironically.

I grew up in the heyday of cassettes. Buy an LP and immediately record to tape! - and I was just thinking - our "Party Tapes" I guess are equivalent to today's playlists.

Paying bills:

Medical bill from Drs office that is not frequented, says Pay Online Here!
It's some 3rd party company that wants me to register with email and crap - Screw That!!

So I go to the Big Banskter website that manages my HSA to "send payment" from there, like so many other banks have.
Well the "New and Improved Experience" want's to hook into your insurance and I think medical companies - asking for IDs and passwords to other sites.
Screw that!!!
They just try to find more ways to worm their way into every bit of information they can get out of you, only to lose it to hackers and the black market.

All I want to do is Pay A Bill

Now I have to go look for a postage stamp, goddamnit.

... hopefully I have one of those "forever" stamps around.

I remember a couple of years ago some elderly chap in my place of employment getting really irate because he couldn't pay his bill by cheque simply because we no longer took them. Progress? Good/Bad?

Now it's a requirement (and we get targeted) on taking a customers email so we can email you a receipt (the pretense) it's clearly a marketing ploy so we have said email and we can then bombard you with deals and crap we sell.

I don't have paranoia about tech, i have embraced it and i see the potential for good and i see the good that it has done but i see also the potential for abuse, not just by those that wish to profit or do us harm but from big companies that also will invariably f*** up and squander trust and lose said data

I genuinely believe that Tim Berners Lee holds his head in his hands sometimes and goes "what the f*** did i do"

I pay via my bank with checks or electronic payments.

I don't like 3rd party paying because they seem to all charge a fee... even payments to the IRS.

Gene editing wipes out mosquitoes

Research to eliminate malaria.

Writing in the journal Nature Biotechnology, Prof Andrea Crisanti and colleagues report that caged populations of Anopheles gambiae collapsed within 7-11 generations.

If this is released in the wild, and that species of mosquito is wiped out, what will take it's place in that niche of nature? Will it be better or worse?

The approach falls within a category of genetic engineering known as a gene drive. It describes technologies that spread a gene or particular suites of genes through a population.

And what if this Gene Drive mutates and transfers to another species?

Isn't there a classic novel about a disease that make women barren? (there are probably several stories)
At the moment, I'm at a loss for the title.
The <something> Syndrome
or something like that?

The disaster in China has led some officials to conclude that internet-based systems, even ones that employ sophisticated encryption, can never be counted on to shield assets.

Note, I have no idea about this site, but it was linked to from a CNN article. It's one of those sites that only allows you 3 articles before you have to sigh-in/subscribe.

This Link
is to an interesting story about espionage between China and the US.

This is the original CNN article I was reading.

It sounds vaguely familiar - or maybe same idea, different subject like ...

I'm not afraid of guns, though some of the people using them scare me - a little.

Yeah, how long until this System is hacked?

We've seen Amber Alerts for missing children and weather alerts for incoming thunderstorms or tornadoes. The presidential alert is like those, only it goes to virtually every cell phone in the country, and you can't turn it off.

I can see someone routing Trump's 3am s***ter tweets to the system.

What could that nice president Trump do with this alert thing?

Could he block all interpersonal communication?
