This is wave one...i'm worried about wave two which they're saying if it came, it'd come in the fall. Look up the Flu of 1918.

Ah well, if it happens, it happens. I'm not too bothered about it.

See here's the weird thing to me, more people die extrapolated for each day from the regular flu than have from the swine flue. Honestly, I'm not that concerned, other than normal flu avoidance procedures. (Handwashing, wiping down public areas with disinfectant wipes.)

And yes, I'm aware of a confirmed case in the area. Who was sick for a week, and is now just fine.

I'm not saying the swine flu is nothing, I just don't understand the panic about it specifically.

I am not bothered really, but it does now start to creep into ones thoughts about it when now over 8000 people are now suffering symptoms of the flu. I am not panicking over it by rushing out to the shops to get face masks

All flu and pneumonia, has the potential to kill and we live with that regularly. I do agree that with the news coverage its every where, and hard not to think about. I wonder though if, the time of 24hour news coverage and global news, if it causes more panic than necessary. I'm all for preparedness, panic however, usually leads to bad decisions and making things worse.

Just to put the numbers in perspective here:
Now these stats do include pneumonia. I couldn't find just the flu ones, quickly.

Incidence extrapolations for USA for Flu: 97,920,000 per year, 8,160,000 per month, 1,883,076 per week, 268,273 per day, 11,178 per hour, 186 per minute, 3 per second. Note: this extrapolation calculation uses the incidence statistic: 36 per 100 (NHIS96); 35 million annually up to 50 million annually (NIAID/CDC); 10-20% yearly (NIAID)

Death rate extrapolations for USA for Flu: 63,729 per year, 5,310 per month, 1,225 per week, 174 per day, 7 per hour, 0 per minute, 0 per second. Note: this extrapolation calculation uses the deaths statistic: 63,730 annual deaths for influenza and pneumonia (NVSR Sep 2001); estimated 20,000 deaths from flu (NIAID)

I don't agree with the mass panic the media are portraying the flu outbreak, but you can see why some are doing it, because the one in 1918 did kill a lot of people

Yes but hygeine is alot better now. and there is better medicine now.

I don't see the need for a panic.

Yeah, I'm all about being aware and practicing safe procedures, and getting treatment early. All those are good things, as is good health care. Since it did originate in Mexico, I wonder if different health care would have made a difference, as there was a higher incidence of death in Mexico, or if the news is at least making people go for treatment sooner, instead of trying to "ride it out" and finding it to be more than their system can handle.

Canceling graduation ceremonies, for example, would be be a bit overboard though.

Though, maybe its my outlook on life and death, that impacts my way of thinking. If it is your time to die...you're going to go and nothing can prevent that. I'm not running into traffic, either, but I look both ways and cross the street. Same with disease prevention.

And I don't mean to seem like I'm directing all this at you personally. I've just been thinking about this whole swine flu thing, and you happened to have an active topic open.

they should take all the mexicans to area 51 or something and do tests on them and find a cure. or send them all to iraq or afghan, and start a viral war

What does that have to do with anything?
