I don't have any alcohol here, and I'm not really of legal age to drink, technically, anyway, so I'm sitting here, drinking Cherry Coke, pretending that it is booze, pretending that it can get me wasted.

The theory here is that the placebo effect will occur, that by believing that the Cherry Coke will get me drunk, it, in essence, will.

There have been times in my life where I have coaxed myself into a mood that, as remarked by others, is similar to being drunk. So, there is a little bit of proof to this theory, that I can indeed force a faux state of drunkeness upon myself.

What do you all think about this? Can you will yourself to feel one way over another, by telling yourself that something is something else than what it is?

What do you think about my little experiment/test/whatever the hell it is?

Any thoughts at all?

I've seen people falling over with slurred speech having thought they had drunk alcohol. They had none.

The mind is a powerful tool and it can play tricks on you.

I dunno, but I saw a tv program where Derren Brown (Is that his name?) made people think they were drunk... kinda like hypnosis but not... and it was like they were wasted they couldn't walk straight, talk properly anything... just like they were drunk... just by making them think about being drunk...

So I guess it obviously has some effect

Did you know that there the number four thread in the Psychology subforum is a thread started by me at the beginning of February, with no comments whatsoever?

The Pyschology forum doesn't get much attention, does it?

But yeah! It's all the power of the mind . . .

So, we admit that people can be tricked if their minds are tricked . . .

but can a person trick himself?

For instance, I know that there is just regular cola sitting beside me. Can I really make myself think that it is not, without any other person's interference? Almost like self-hypnosis?

Go for it!

Damn, my fingers just didn't want to type the word "go." And it is getting a little harder to type. Maybe it's actually working!

Or maybe I've been typing too long.

Yeah I've got a thought:
Maybe you have a bit of a drinking problem if you sit around and convince your brain that you are, in fact, inebriated.
My advice to you would be one of the following:
1) Get counseling for your premature alcohol addiction
2) Actively cultivate this new interest and drink yourself retarded.
3) Actively cultivate a healthy addiction, like pot or cheeseburgers.

Thank you.

I read about this experiment once - they filled a nightclub with ravers, and served drinks all night, but the drinks were non-alcoholic beers etc.
By the end of the night, apparently people were staggering around, and making passes at each other. They then put the lights on, and announced what they had done - so the story went, the crowd was horrified at what fools they had been made of - and some got violent.

So I read anyway, so it just shows how powerful mere suggestion can be

Maybe I don't have a drinking problem - maybe I'm just really bored. And choosing to get drunk mentally instead of physically, which would have adverse affects on my body.

And hate to tell you, but . . . pot and cheeseburgers aren't healthy addictions.
