States

I was in England for the last few days, when me and my dad got talking to this American in a pub. He asked us to write down all the US states we could think of without looking them up. After about 10 minutes we managed 48 out of 50.

We thought it was quite good, and the man admitted it was, he said that we named more than twice what his wife could manage, and she has never left the USA. He said he finds it interesting that people outside the US seem to have better geographic knowledge of the country than a lot of Americans do.

So without cheating sit and write down all the states you can think of and type the number in here and where you come from.

Obviously don't write down the states on this thread, and please don't cheat. Just the number of states you can think of on the top of your head.

all of them...i learned a song in elemenrary school that taught us all the songs. i still know it and sing from time to time

I know them all. My dad and I used to run through them in alphabetical order if we were walking long distance.

I know all the British Counties too.

We tried british counties afterwards, failed miserably, got a higher proportion of the US states than British Counties. Turns out that I got the one I live in wrong!

With the states the two we missed we got eventually (about 20 minutes later) so we think we did alright.

Theres a point actually, was better at America than here.

My Dad got me doing states after we had been through counties, capital cities, and British Prime ministers and monarchy.

We trierd presidents, but didn't get that far,

It was great living in the middle of nowhere - lots of walks!!!

I know them all as well. I was taught that same song in elementary.

Haha, I'd be good with capital cities and British PM's, presidents I'd fail at and counties I'd be awful at like I say.

I'm still not entirely sure whether I live in Aberdeenshire or Kincardineshire.

Capital cities I am good at! Except Australia - I'm so confused over that one.

Blah, I'm the only person on here so far who didn't get all fifty. Forgot one, and stupidly made the mistake of remembering there was a 'North' and 'South' of another.

I was stuck on 49 for a while, wondering what the f*** state I couldn't think of.

It was 5 minutes before I realized that I was missing New Jersey.

Then I realized that, well, I wouldn't really miss New Jersey anyway.

I'm reminded of a conversation I had with my brother. I was telling him how they're going to be demolishing the Meadowlands (a stadium where the New York Gians play) once they're done building the new stadium.

His reply:

"That would explain the parking lot. Now all they need to do is demolish the rest of Jersey."

What is it with (some) Americans and New Jersey?
