Spelling

Not sure if this is the right forum, but...

I understand that spelling is different in America to here, what I don't understand however is why, so does anyone know or is it just because we like to be different?

The only reason I was wondering is because I've noticed that because I have my dictionary set to English(U.S) every time I type 'realise' or 'neighbour' on here I get told it's wrong, I also get that when typing 'mould', but I'm not sure if that's just that I've been spelling it wrong all my life.

I use 'realize' all the time. I once saw 'realise' in one of the autobiography novels by an Indian (Not the Native American), then I start to notice that there're other differences than -or & -ours, ou & o ..

But why do we do it?

Probably pronunciations back in the days.
I hear different sounds when an American or British speak.
Or probably that just to me, but it matches with and without 'u' (like or vs our -ish).

I don't know but it can be challenging when trying to play scrabble against someone else from another country.

Publishers decide how to spell words. American publishers spell some words differently than British publishers. The same goes for punctuation. Each publisher uses slightly different punctuation.

The situation could be worse. In India, publishers use two different alphabets for the same language. The two alphabets have different names, Hindi and Urdu. They are normally listed in reference books as two separate languages, but I have two girlfriends, one who speaks Hindi and one who speaks Urdu. They insist that Hindi and Urdu are two dialects of the same language like American and Australian might be two dialects of the same language.

And, my friend who speaks Urdu, is Muslim; so I always wonder if she might explode.

American tend to sometimes use Z instead of S,also they miss out the letter U (as in color-colour).I can only think of one example of them missing out the letter G,UK- tonight US- Tonite.

I think it is as KO explained because in Portuguese we use S and in Brazil they use Z instead.Also Brazilians use the letter K when it should be Q,there isnt a K in the Portuguese alphabet lol.

Differences in spelling

It is a bit annoying when your computer is set to American spelling.

I have a feeling that American English spelling is different from the British spellings of some words, may have begun out of defiance of our former colonial masters.
But I could be mistaken! I try to use the English forms of spelling,when I think about it! After all it is your language!

It's because American English is correct. Sorry, but it's true.

In the US, tonight IS the correct spelling!
