Sometimes my computer won't restart/shut down

And I have absolutely no idea why this is happening.

It's not all the time - Just occasionally. It just happened now. I wanted to restart as my net connection was having a spazz-out, I clicked "restart" and I waited for a minute or so. When nothing happened I clicked it again and waited.

Nothing happened at all. I tried the same with "shut down" and I got the same result.

In the end I have to just turn it off at the wall, or it'd just be on forever.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? It's frustrating.

That's one of the toughest things to diagnose. It's usually a bad hardware driver that hangs things up.

Try to uninstall any programs you don't use and, if you're able, update any and all drivers.

But it's not a big problem either way. Hold the power switch for 4 seconds to shut it down hard without having to unplug it.

Its like they freeze. And it always happens at the worst possible time too, like if I have a deadline to meet or something.

Every now and then I generally look at my programmes and delete what I don't need or use so I'll go through them again tonight, this might sound like a really silly question but how do I know if I need to update my drivers?

And thanks for that other piece of info. I didn't know I could do that.

The proper term is "calibrated lateral impact."

Or "percussive maintenance."

hmmm... that's happened to me too, and after calling the support people i learned that this usually happnens because an unexpected error has occured in the registry. u could try doing a system restore, if that doesn't work than a system recovery is the best shot. but if u do a system recovery, all ur information and data that u have stored in ur computer will be erased. so u'll have to back up the data before doing this. another thing u can do is get a software that cleans and fixes the registry, that way ur manual commands will function more successfully...
