I have just recently transferred to a Sociology class and have been given an assignment to create a hypothesis on either crime and deviance or health & illness.

I have decided to base my hypothesis on poverty and crime. I have to administer a questionaiire for research on the statement 'Poverty plays a huge role in crime'.

I am stumped at what Questions I can ask, any suggestions? I'll be asking these to the public, friends and family.

Should poverty stricken families have special laws applicible to them when they rob and steal under the pretence of "survival" or should they be jusged like anyone else?

I'm not stealing, I do not condone plagarism. I'm simply asking for examples, any examples I like will ne rephrased entirely or give room to spinball other Questions.

Take a look at the society collapsing thread I created. Loads of ideas there.

Haha! Leave one thread, walk into the exact same discussion on another one!
This question worded with less bias. There's a really interesting statistic out there related to the legalisation of abortion and a drop 15-20 years on in crime, thought to be because there were fewer underprivileged youth growing up.

Lol, we started our little chat on my thread Then I walked into this, dunno if its coincidence or what.

Interesting point on crime and abortion though. More ammo for me to use against the Liberal Human Rights crowd, now I know they are responsible for todays crime.

A project on negative stereotypes and crime could also be really interesting. For example; Do stereotypes of race/ youth/ poverty create self-fulfilling prophecies for young black men in America? How could they be overcome?

Don't know if poverty plays a huge role in crime. Perhaps abject poverty may incline even decent people to steal, but I tend to think that affluence affects crime---such as the rise in car thefts when the overall pool of nicer vehicles rises.

Really? That's interesting. So as in a link between the visibility of wealth and crime?

I think you're both right. I don't think either poverty or affluence exclusively has a causal link to crime, I believe both of them do.

I do feel that poverty plays a slightly larger role though as Grrrl kind of alluded.

This hypothesis that you have been asked to do, is it a done tailed or a two tailed hypothesis? This will help to think of the best suggestions

He's not saying YOU are stealing. He is giving you example of a question you can ask. As in "Some that are poor have too much pride to ask for help, but they will steal to survive instead".
