More money is spent per person on health care in the United States than in any other nation in the world. However the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 45.7 million Americans (about 15.3% of the total population) had no health insurance coverage at some point during 2007. That means that although they may be given help with emergency care through the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, any after care, mental health care, dental etc, is not covered. That means people are dying because of right wing opposition of anything socilism sounding. In the UK i can go the doctor at any time, for any reason (even if it seems trivial at the time, such as the time i had a sore arm, i went to my GP, who with one look at it called a ambulance. It turned out to be a very serious infection which if left much longer could have had serious lasting concequences) I can see any medical practictionar free. Without have to fill in a load of forms or pay an excese. True my taxes may be a little higher but when you have had healthcare bills that would have run into the hundreds of thousands you don't mind. Despite the drumming it sometimes gets in the British press (none of the stories have i or anyone i have talked witnessed) socialised medicine helps people and that is what governments are there to do.

I agree with you, especially with the part about the healthcare bills!

Sweden is an excellent example. Universal, flat rate benefits and huge investment in health care, education and other social areas means they have one of the most equal societies in the world. They also have a average higher life expectancy than the US and the UK, which not a lot of people realise.

Some countries make it work pretty well.
Seems to me people are overly critical of the idea, but admittedly its the entire culture that needs to be taken into account, for many places it simply would not fit into their system.

You are so very lucky. I wish we had that same system here. I have no insurance and pay big money just for a yearly check up.

My problem with socialized healthcare is that I have spoken to many Canadians that say that waiting lists for basic things such as MRIs are so long that often they seek care in the US. I would like to know more about how we could make sure that doesn't happen here, also would be interested in knowing how to make sure that the government is not making the decisions that our healthcare providers should be helping us to make.

I think that you will find that most right wingers such as myself do not have a knee jerk hatred of government involvement in healthcare. Its just that government has made such a hash of so many sectors that great care must be taken to make sure that any involvement in the healthcare industry is to the benefit of the patient and respectful of the patient's ultimate right to make their own decisions.

I guess it boils down to me being cautious about handing the healthcare system to the same people that run the DMV.

Yes, but how is a good thing when the people running your healthcare system are more intrested in making profits, rather than helping people. You are right that it shouldn't be politicians making the decisions involving your healthcare, but neither should it be CEOs, deciding whether to allow a heart transplant to go ahead. It should be qualified health professionals, and i feel that socialised medicine gives them more freedom to make that decision

I agree that the healthcare system is an extreme mess right now, The insurance companies are massive unwieldy and expensive. I just advocate a cautious and patient centered approach to any changes in the system. We need to study what works, and what doesn't in other countries and try to streamline the system so that the dollars are getting where they need to, in the care of patients. I think that it can be done, however not under the current government culture of graft, waste, and burdensome paperwork.

(Off topic here but I love your signature, Doug Adams is one of my favorites.)

Good article! I live in Canada and can attest to the efficiency of the system here. Obama would do well to incorporate part of this model for America.

I've found snopes to be quite honest and have integrity.
