If I'm going to be away from my PC for 1-2 hours is it better to shut it down or let it run? I am not computer savvy and have heard conflicting stories on which is best.

I tend to shut the PC down personally.

I hardly ever shut mine down... it goes into hibernation on it's own... only real time I turn it off is if I go away for a day or so

If it's only an hour or two you might as well leave it running. Make sure you've disconnected from the internet though.

I have used Standby for the past 3 years and it worked fine but all of a sudden last week when I tried to get back on the screen was black and the only way I knew how to get back on was to shut down my PC and re-boot.

OK, people, I've got 3 answers to let it run & 2 answers to shut it down. This is what I meant in my original question about getting conflicting advice. What is a dummy like me supposed to do...LOL

What are your reasons behind?

Want to save electricity? Then standby or better yet shut it down so none of the parts will be powered on.

Afraid of lags or spywares and such? Close all browsers and make sure they do close down for real and not lurking around in the task manager either.

Don't want to wear out your computer sooner? Shut it down.
