I know, it sounds a little ridiculous, but it might help if there were an organization that people could join for support, and promotion of atheism as an acceptable belief. I think there are a lot of would be "non-believers out there who remain that way out of fear of being ostracized.

Any thoughts? Ideas on structure of leadership etc.?

I realize the danger here is in becoming a non-religious religion, and that's not my intent, but there is a possibility here.

i propose the religion of the self, selfism? where you are your own pope, where you are your own unique religion and with a rule of absolute respect for the difference in each individual, and to encourage that difference. what do you think?

no way.

Set up an atheist bowling team to socialize, or something, but creating a church means defining a set of rules and dogma and more importantly having a leader or leaders.
All this is completely silly in the context of simply not believing n something.

I wouldn't join or consider myself associated with any atheist church.
joining the skeptics society or something might be a better idea.

I think, being one myself, being an Athiest is something that you can only do by yourself- what I mean is you can't excactly believe in non-belief. The option is already there to be Athiest, but trying to "recruit" people into your church would create greater conflicts in the "Science vs. Religion" topic, don't you think?

Bad idea, in my opinion atheism promotes independence, religion is about being a sheep.

Agreed, the very thought of dubbing any atheist organisation as a church is an oxymoron and takes away the essence of what being an atheist is about. I would just think that having an open forum or group that can debate their views on atheism seems more appropriate.

I appreciate the comments so far. Frankly, I cannot work any model through in my head that doesn't ultimately become something that I would hate. As I expected, the replies I have seen so far,(although it is an admittedly small sample)are what I expected; Atheists are also individualists. So much the better.

an atheist church, huh?

if it's one thing I think is a drag is going to church.

besides, there are a lot alliances, societies, and groups composed of and by atheists.

there are a few in san fran that i know of. I don't attend to the meetings because all they really talk about is religion and how to promote atheism and stuff like that and that's not really my thing.

the words atheist and church are a contradiction

The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄ???? (atheos), which was derogatively applied to anyone thought to believe in false gods, no gods, or doctrines that stood in conflict with established religions
