You're right, it was a dumb thing to say. My dad spoke highly of Scotland. He went on a brief sightseeing trip while waiting for a ride back to England during WW2. His B-17 had to land there, thanks to German Me-109's.

I've never understood why people supposedly drink more in Scotland and Ireland.

Is it just a case of the English trying to make them seem bad and then people adhering to the stereotype? Or is it just that for some reason the Scots and Irish are better drinkers than the English?

I used to think that people drank more up north because it was colder so they needed something to warm them up

I've often wondered that too, could it have something to do with more English people visiting Scotland than the other way round?

I reckon it's partly the culture and partly the fact we have less immigration here.

European countries drink more than any other contenant in the UK, so the more immigrants in a European country the less they will drink (in a logical leap). England has not only more immigrants than Scotland, but considerably more immigrants from outside Europe than Scotland does (most immigrants here are from Poland, a heavy drinking country). Therefore logically there will be more alcohol consumed here.

Also we have a thriving Whisky industry and we take pride in things like being obese and drinking to much etc etc etc.

I'm not sober.

It's not so much the fact of people drinking a lot that is the problem in my eyes it's the damage they cause whilst they are drunk.People may drink more on the continent but they seem to be in control more than the British whilst under the influence.Apparently the Portuguese are the 'Worlds biggest drinkers' according to the frogs,I don't believe this as hardly any people under the age of 30 and women in general drink alcohol.
