SCOTLAND will be an independent country by 2018 if the SNP win the election, Alex Salmond vowed yesterday. The SNP leader said he was confident of holding a referendum on splitting from the UK before the next Holyrood election in 2016.

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2011/04/28/alex-salmond-scotland-to-be-independent-country-by-2018-if-snp-win-holyrood-election-86908-23091535/

Opinion polls seem to suggest most people in Scotland don't want independence, but the thought of it is scary.

I just don't understand why anyone wants Scotland to become independent from the rest of the United Kingdom, what is the point?

I think you would be in trouble being independent, that's nothing against the Scottish I just think the union is mutually beneficial.

It'd be a bad idea if my opinion means anything.

Financially I don't think Scotland would do that great. In times of prosperity I think Scotland would be fine, along with other small countries with large oil revenues. e.g. Iceland.

But during financial crises Scotland would sink fast... e.g. Iceland.

London benefits from the oil and natural gas revenues and Scotland benefits from London.

I just can't help but think it is so petty that we live in one of the richest countries in the world (the UK), live an extremely high standard of living on a small island that is attached to England, which not only has a very similar culture but also speak the same language. Yet people want to break that up due to some odd idea of nationalistic pride after watching Braveheart one too many times.

I just don't see the point in it. Why break up something good, which may or may not be beneficial, when we are already in such a good state comparably with the rest of the world.

Australia should be come a republic IMO. We already do everything ourselves. There is really no point in being tied to the United Kingdom.

Too many loyalists living in your country.. Glasgow seems to be anti-crown but all over the highlands they are loyal to the queen, It's the same as Northern Ireland.. There will never be a united Ireland.. The queen would hand the 6 counties back tmw if she could. Opposition will cause division and violence in Scotland. Your better off being part of the crown.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Queen. And I don't really think the Highlands is particularly pro-monarchy either.

Glasgow itself probably has more 'monarchists' due to the whole protestant/catholic divide that doesn't exist in the rest of Scotland.

It's her crown though.. Scotland play a major part in Afghanistan too.., If Scotland became independent, a neutrality petition would be drawn up within days.. Britain needs Scotland and Scotland needs Britain. I could never see this happening.

The last thing I want to see is Scotland to become Neutral. We have a moral duty to help the world.

Most of the English are pretty unfased by it all. If the scots want to go it alone then let them. Have a vote and abide by the outcome. personally I would let them have a referendum say every 25 years that would mean every generation gets their say. If they vote for independence, then have it and get on with it. If they vote to stay part of the UK then shut up going on about what a bunch of t***s they think the english are, how they morally own all the oil and how much everybody outside of Ibrox Park hates the queen. We had a saying in the navy. Put up or shut up.

I don't hate the Queen. She comes across as quite a hard working nice person if you ask me.

I do hate Ibrox though.

You can be Neutral and help the world! Ireland is neutral and we have troops in Darfur, The Lebanon and Kosovo peacekeeping.

Are you involved in Libya, where you involved in Afghanistan or Iraq? No. Morally unjust by not being involved.
