A teenager attempting to become the youngest sailor to sail around the world alone is feared lost at sea after her crew lost contact with her boat.

An engineer on 16-year-old Abby Sunderland's crew told ABC News that two emergency beacons on her boat are now signaling she is in trouble. The boat was in the southern Indian Ocean near Reunion Island, east of Madagascar. The nearest ship reportedly was 400 miles away.

Abby's mother, MaryAnne Sunderland, told ABC News that Abby manually activated two beacons around 6 a.m. PT Thursday. A beacon designed to automatically go off when it contacts water had not been activated.

Maybe she's just taken ill or has been injured and can't communicate? I hope they find her soon.

Chica's got some nads, that's all I got to say. I'm a bit jealous now that we know she's not dead; that's some extreme adventuring right there.

Yaay! Glad she's unharmed.

How many people would have blamed her parents if it had turned out badly?

I'm fairly certain the parents themselves would have spent the rest of their lives agreeing with them anyway. Assuming they care about her, I can't imagine how the guilt wouldn't have plagued their mind for the rest of their lives.

The parents really have some nads too just for letting her go in the first place, since you mention it.

Why do people do such pointless and stupid and selfish things.

I guess if they didn't we'd still be living in caves.

For the sake of incredible adventure and an experience that will change the way you view life?

I used a paddle boat in Blackpool once. I think I might have a crack at crossing the ocean by myself.
I mean, what could go wrong?

I disagree. I stated that the things being done must be pointless. Leaving a cave is not pointless. Sailing round the world when there was places to be discovered was not pointless. Sailing round the world when there is nothing to be discovered is.

Only further proving the selfishness of the action.

You make it sound like she went out there to die. Is everyone that goes on an extreme wilderness trip selfish then?
