I've been back on Ritalin for months due to my ADHD-I (the mentality sluggish kind, not the hyper kind). I'm prescribed to take 40mg daily. When I take a 20mg pill, in the morning, in no time, I feel great. I could think I could do anything. However, that feeling is short-lived. In 2 hours, I become tired and my mouth is dry. I decided to cut my 20mg pill and take 1/4 of it.

I wish I knew of a way to feel "great" much longer and not have a dry mouth...or fatigue...or worse depression.

Can anyone give me advice?

I used to take Ritalin back in Elementary School until Grade 6, when I asked my mom if I could stop taking it. Sure, it helped me focus in school, but I didn't like how it made me feel. If you feel depressed or off if you're taking Ritalin, maybe ask you doctor if there are more natural alternatives to treating ADHD.

That's not all of it. Sometimes, Ritalin can raise my heart rate. I admit I drank light beer to "slow down" from anymore discomfort. I figured if I cut my 20mg pill in fours and take each piece every hour or half-hour, maybe I won't feel so sick.

I don't think this is the kind of advice you can get on here, you need to speak to your doctor!

Try talking to your doctor once more and look up alternatives.

This, and if your doctor doesn't seem to be helping then maybe you need to try looking for a second opinion.

Starting today, I started to cut my 20mg Ritalin medication in half. I would take each splited 10mg, each hour. If I seem okay, I will continue. If I don't, I'll either return to 5mg/a hour or seek a second opinion, like Sliver_Lining said.

I wouldn't mess with your doses. I think that is something you should let the doctor "play with". It can be dangerous messing with the prescribed doses your doctor prescribes you.

You might think they don't know what they are doing, however....they went to school for this stuff and I am sure they know what they are doing.

If you don't like what the doctor has decided on, go see a second doctor, like Silver suggested.

I get what you mean, but if I take pill whole, my heart races and after 2 hours, I don't feel well.

Seriously, get a second opinion.

Have you brought this up to the person that prescribed you the medication? What was their thoughts?

I'm with Drgnfly83.

Self medicating can go horribly wrong.

Talk to your doctor 1st.... or get a new doctor... 2nd opinion... quick.

BTW, just want you to know that there is in no way shape or form any judgement going on here....

I promise.

I just know what I have done in the past and the problems that occurred because I played around with my prescriptions. It doesn't usually end well.

It can actually harm you, badly!

Yes, and this is the very best advise you will find, bar none.
Stop self medicating. You need to have your blood work done by a medical professinal and then it is your doctor who needs to be adjusting the dose of your meds. And yes even the light beer to counter the meds is self medicating, .

If it is as you say and your doctor dosen't seem interested inhelping you then ask him/her to refer you to one that you can talk to and deal with the condernsand isues you have with the meds.
