The only experience I have with it is secondary through a friend. She dated a widow and the relationship was ended because she expected him to give her all of his heart and entirely let go of his past love. You can't ask that of someone; that person will always be a part of them. My advice would be to not get involved if that's not something you are prepared to be respectful of.
He also didn't want any more children and she does eventually, though I'm not sure that has anything to do with his wife's death.
