It all depends on who you ask. When it was first criminalized it was as a way of controlling industrial hemp production to benefit dupont chemicals

Quote:
December 1937: The Marijuana Tax Act is signed into law, initiating 60 years of cannabis prohibition and annihilating a multi-billion dollar industry. DuPont and other synthetic materials manufacturers reap vast profits by filling the void conveniently left by the criminalization of industrial hemp.

Yep, that was part of it too. Randolph Hurst had a lot to do with it, with his scare journalism campaign, as well. The main reason it is still illegal, is they don't know how to change the laws, without losing face.

Why is alcohol legal?
It is better that pot is illegal to keep prices down, if corporate rates kick in there will be price increases and taxes, do you really want to pay more?

In Michigan USA...it is now legal to use hemp medicinally, unfortunately the number of illnesses that the law covers is very few...mostly cancer, epilepsy etc..I don't think any research has been done to tests it's effects on mental disorders, but I wish they would. I'm sick of having to constantly look over my shoulder.
