You could simply tell the person that you're trying to read and would appreciate being left alone to do so. And when they stop talking, smile and say "Thank you."

You really need to do this in a polite tone of voice and with a smile on your face. You might suggest that you're at a particularly exciting part of the book, or that you need to concentrate on it because reading it is a part of some educational course or some other gentle fib.

You don't have to be rude to people and most are quite understanding if you have a reason for not wanting to socialise, and tell them so. But body language and tone of voice are just as important at the words you use.

Speaking for myself, I like to be sociable and chat, but I always make it clear that I also like to keep my eye on my little girl when she's playing in the park or on the beach so my attention may not entirely be on chatting.

It is possible to do both. It's different when trying to read of course, so that's different.

What book was it, anyway..?

And while you're about it, you could refer to the full sentence rather than snip it so you can take it out of context.

I said: You could simply tell the person that you're trying to read and would appreciate being left alone to do so. And when they stop talking, smile and say "Thank you."

You snipped: you're trying to read and would appreciate being left alone

?

I don't quite get what your point is, but I suspect its something snide.*

Where DO people like you come from...? <shakes head sadly>

*Snide: Derogatory or mocking in an indirect way. (of a person) devious and underhand.

Politely Telling Someone to 'Go Away'

???

hmm

please go away (maybe?)

or

What if one were to look at this as a sign that it's time to win souls for the Kingdom of Heaven?

Instead, just know that many will turn away. Narrow is the road and few will find Salvation.

So just ask: "Hello friend, are you saved? Has the God of creation done such a supernatural work in your life that the sin you once loved is now the sin you hate? Let's sit down and let me share with you what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has done on the Cross of Calvary."

Then, just be prepared to commit another six hours of discussion if they pull your bluff.

All theory by the way. I never have the opportunity to ask someone to leave.
