Doctors in California say as many as 25 children are suffering from a mysterious, poliolike virus that is leaving them with paralyzed limbs, USA Today reports.

The cause of most of these cases is not known, health officials say. The average age of the children is 12.

"What we're seeing now is bad," Keith Van Haren, a pediatric neurologist at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, told the newspaper. "The best-case scenario is complete loss of one limb, the worst is all four limbs, with respiratory insufficiency, as well. It's like the old polio."

Seems everyone here must be too young to remember polio?

I'm guessing it was pre 1994. Sounds f***ing horrible though.
Cure? I've had too much morphine to Google.

Vaccines created in the 1950's & well under way in the 60's brought the world wide epidemic to almost eradicated except for some endemic areas. Resurgence in Syria or possibly a new type of polio has been documented.

This stuff in Cali is NOT polio- just polio like. Hope they find out what it is quickly & hopefully it is not an emerging problem.

I'm 38 and I'm among the last to have a polio vaccination scar on my arm. A lot of people older than me don't have them.

I'm 38 too and don't have one. I remember getting the oral polio vaccine though, and my son's first dose was opv, but by the second dose it was ipv. The nurse said that it had made enough of a comeback that opv was not recommended anymore and all children were recommended to get ipv as it contains the attenuated virus, and I guess opv didn't.

Scary stuff though that there is a new virus out there and we don't know what it is.

It most likely won't work on this. It's a different creature.

It's funny seeing those scars on actors in the movies about the past Like cave men with vaccination scars! I'm not sure most youngsters would even know what those are!

I wouldn't know one if I saw one. I'm 36 so I obviously missed it by a couple years. My husband is almost 40 and he doesn't have one either. I wonder if it's a "Western state" thing.

Guilty as charged.
I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or a good thing.

I'm 33, so no vaccine scar for me. But my mom has one. She's lived in Maryland all her life. I remember asking her when I was 4 why she had a "spot" on her arm. I didn't understand that it was a scar until I got older. She told me about the vaccine when I was old enough to understand what she was talking about.

I'd have to ask but I'm pretty sure the only reason I have one is because we moved overseas (Japan) when I was just a little under a year old and it was military regulation. Someone actually once asked me if I'd had a cigar put out on my arm
