Prime Minister Gordon Brown is planning to give police the power to stop and search people without giving a reason, sources have told the BBC.

What do you think? I personally think that it could damage race relations, as they are going to concentrate in predominately ethnic areas, but I think that it is necessary when considering the crime rates in these areas.

I love living in the US.

The President has no legal authority to order this because it violates our Constitutionally protected rights.

It must be weird living in a place that has no such protection for its citizens.

I agree with you 100 percent. I am a strong advocate of the Constitution and a believer in freedoms.

Want that idea have to go before the law makers first? If so, and after that the courts will jump in

Yeah, I think this is just a proposal, because I'm sure it involves a change in the law.

They still have to take it through the law courts. . . . And there are a couple of institutions that can veto it.

They won't stop you. They'll be stopping the black and Asian kids who spend all their time loitering Unfortunately, there have been a lot of violence with these groups recently, so I can see why they're planning on doing it.

I enjoy loitering

Her profile says she lives in Long Island. . . . or was that not what you were talking about?

I am black and I've lived in Brixton, south London, which is predominantely black, for most of my life. From what I saw, the police only ever searched the kids who were loitering or the older, rough looking men who smelt like weed.

At the moment, they want to target the kids as they are the ones killing each other.

That's how I figure that.

Even then though, you say loitering, I say "waiting for the bus". You say loitering, I say "just bumped into an old friend on the way into town and stopped for a chat".

There are dozens of completely legitimate reasons for a young person of any color to be standing in the street, alone or in a group.

Previously police needed "just cause" to stop and search these individuals. This measure would remove the protections that stop an overly suspicious, racist, or just plan over-keen copper from searching youths who happen to waiting for a gym to open, or waiting for the parents to pick them up, etc...

The thought of police having the power to stop and search you without just cause "just in case he's breaking the law" is chilling indeed.

I imagine that the intent of this bill is not to deliberately encroach on our freedoms, but rather to reduce administration since a copper will no longer have to justify his stops. It would probably also make prosecuting criminals easier, since they couldn't get off based on the stop being judged unjustified and hence illegal by a court. In theory the number of stops should not increase, and should still be justified by "just cause". In practice though, I doubt this will be the case.

The Constitution is the only thing thats keeping a dictatorship from happening over here. Pretty soon it will be just like George Orwell predicted like over in the UK, cameras up you a** everywhere you go.
