Since the issue of people posting pictures of meat on the "Animal Rights" thread seems to have been going on for years (look in the archive), I'd like to ask a few questions about it.

For example, I raised the question about people posting "oppositional" pictures on human rights threads - does that happen?

Why do people post these pictures of meat on the "Animal Rights" thread?

Is it to try to hurt vegans?

Is it defensive?

Is it both at the same time?

Someone mentioned what was socially sanctioned is important - so, is it a "safety in numbers" thing, essentially ridiculing a new idea (that animals have rights)?

Are there other issues - racism, a feminist thread - that would create a similar response?

I imagine that, if this were the time of widespread support for human slavery, people would be posting pictures of slaves on an abolitionist thread - and perhaps calling people "n****r lovers," as was the case during that particular campaign.

So, are the meat pictures similar to that?

Do people post pictures of felled rainforests on environmental threads?

Perhaps people can enlighten me, since I have noticed that this sort of thing happens all the time.

Dude. Slavery and meat-eating are two completely different things and until you understand that then you're never going to get anywhere here.

You can choose not to eat meat but not force it onto others. My uncle doesn't eat meat but he doesn't object when the rest of the family do it. Sure my aunt switched to a veggie diet when they married but he never pushed it on her.

I think it is a bit of a mocking of the protesters viewpoint, since most people think that eating meat is a normal, everyday, natural thing to do.

I think many people are simply not aware of how horrendous the living conditions are for factory farmed animals, so for them, it's making a big deal out of nothing. There are people who literally think animals live a happy normal life until one day they get shot in the head, never knowing what hit them, and pass away peacefully. If only this were the case...

It is. We're omnivores. That would be why we have canine teeth. Incisors for cutting, canines for ripping and tearing (meat teeth) and molars for crushing and chewing. Our bodies are made to take in a certain amount of meat. If you eat right then it is possible to live pretty healthily without occasionally having meat at the table but it's not really ideal. Especially if you're also skipping out on dairy.

The argument isn't that our bodies aren't made for eating meat, but rather that we are smart enough and aware enough to choose not to torment animals, given that, as omnivores, we have the choice of eating plants OR animals.

Yeah, everyone would stop eating meat

Look, when I go home I see sheep escaping through holes in the fences and cows and horses carefully avoiding each other. I only eat free-range eggs and if I had the choice I'd go for free-range meats. I'm not about to cut it out entirely but I don't eat a lot of meat anyway. What I do I try to make as ethical as possible. Sure, it's not exactly perfect but I see the animals out having a life - exploring the next field through the hole, escaping onto railway lines and causing huge train back ups. It's not exactly the picture you're trying to paint.

Not totally. As I said it doesn't exactly give you everything you need, especially if you don't know what you need to replace what you're losing. There's a lot of reports out there of girls simply trying to live on chips and crisps and making themselves very ill.

How on earth am I supposed to be forcing anything on you? You appear to have no understanding about the nature of social change - some people, the pioneers of a new idea - have to talk about it for others to consider it.

If you really think there is no connection between human and animal slavery, then I would invite you (not being able to force you) to read The Dreaded Comparison: https://www.amazon.com/Dreaded-Comparison-Human-Animal-Slavery/dp/0962449334 which contains a foreword by human rights advocate Alice Walker.

Have you ever been to a "cattle market" and seen how the buyers size up and bid for the animal slaves? The slaves, btw, are often branded, or have their ears punched.

I guess for the same reason anyone would post a hurtful thing about something that they know someone else cares deeply about, regardless if they agree or not, and that is to show thier hatred.

For surely, they don't have the caring person's feelings in mind.

Ok. I am against actual cruelty to animals. I am against branding and ear-punching cos that sucks.

But there is a mjor difference between cultivating a food source and taking people from their homes to force them to work themselves half to death just to make a few dollars more on that cotton crop.

I am against cruelty to animals. I don't eat lamb because I believe that it's cruel. I do however eat beef, chicken and pork but try to make sure it comes from RSPCA approved sources. Being in Aberdeen I have friends who've grown up on and around working farms and they were never cruel or neglectful and neither were their parents/neighbours. They valued the animals.

And by the way, this isn't about social change whatsoever. You say time and again that I have no idea about these things. You know absolutely nothing about me, what I know or what I've seen so how about you stop assuming that you know me and take a second to listen for once instead of cracking stupid "jokes" or calling me a stupid little girl for once?

Yes, I certainly understand that people are socialised into speciesist societies which tell them that any problems that may arise from their use of nonhuman animals will be addressed through the mechanism of traditional animal welfarism.

Back to my question, then; we might expect pictures of human slaves in a society that thinks human slavery is "normal"?

Yes, but I am being criticised even for bring the issue up - even on the "Animal Rights" thread.

It seems like some part of denial is being threatened and there is resentment about that (even though no-one is "forced" to even visit this thread).

This seems to suggest that people are not so sure about the rightness of this "normal" thing after all.
