My daughter wants some but I had to put my foot down and say no, I don't want giant bugs in my house.

I did have stick insects as a kid, one night I didn't put the lid back on the tank properly and woke up in the morning to a room covered in stick insects

I want a pet Praying Mantis, I was told (correct me if I'm wrong) that they're the only insects that can a)pivot their heads and b)recognize you

True, and mostly true.
You can buy 50 or so eggs at a gardening center, they come grouped together in ootheca (egg sacks)
or you could plant some mammoth sunflowers, they appear to like those...

We had giant african snails as kids, I can't remember much about them, my Mum said they smelt really bad though
