A recent poll has shown that over half of americans interveiwed say that torture is justified to stop terrorism. What happened to the land of freedom and laws that every american i meet boasts about. Didn't we go to Iraq (after it was realised there was no WMDs) to give the people the rule of law and to stop human right abuses. It seems that the US public is as hypicrical as its government sometimes is (eg shutting down Gitmo, yet keep bagram airbase, which according to the red cross is worse) How is torture ever justified, especially when its been proven to be so ineffective. People just want the pain to stop and will tell the intorigators any thing to make that happen.
The founding fathers will be rolling in their graves.

Fortunately, I only know a little less than half the people here, and none of them think it is, or was justified.

Polls scare me, especially when I don't know the validity of them.

How do you feel about the use of torture against suspected terrorists to obtain
information about terrorism activities? Can that? [READ EACH ITEM.]

This is the actual poll and the results. I think the scariest part is the 20% of poeple who think torture is often justified

So if half of the people believe that torture is sometimes justified, that doesn't mean that half of the people believe it is always justified.

And I'm sure they weren't taking supposed terrorists or those suspected of having knowledge to Gitmo to feed them cakes and pies and ask them questions nicely.

Terrorists are NOT soldiers. They're monsters that would blow themselves up along with your family for their own inhumane cause. I don't see the point in granting them humane rights if they refuse to act like human beings. I rather see one of them water tortured momentarily than to see any member of my family blown up by one of them.

I am not for torturing people at all...but sometimes I think "Why the hell do we have to be held to a higher standard?"

I mean really these people don't think twice about torture and chopping off someone's head on camera to show the world...and the chance that an American soldier is going to be tortured if captured is alot higher than if we capture one of them...

It's hard to walk the walk and talk the talk all the time...it must be very hard to be a soldier in that situation...but I thank God I have them out there protecting my right to voice this opinion!

Yeah the numbers are kinda shocking. I dunno, I'm strongly against it but then again I wasn't interviewed.

But they are still human beings. also by degrading them to torture we are degrading ourself (also by torturing we are conducting a inhumane action and by your argument we should therefore not be granted human rights)

The western world and in particular America places a very high value on human rights, and rightly so. Not applying them to people from other cultures is quite horrific in my opinion.

The are called 'human rights' for a reason, all humans are entitled to them.

No, it doesn't, but I would gladly give up some of my humanity if I knew it would result in saving the lives of loved one.

Because our men and woman in uniform have died in their millions for that higher standard. Against the Nazis right up to the taliban

I understand having concern for a loved one, but you don't know that.
