Obama announced the Energy Department will award $1.45 billion in loan guarantees to Abengoa Solar to help it build Solona, one of the largest solar generation plants in the world near Gila Bend, Ariz.
Abengoa Solar, headquartered in Lakewood, Colo., is a unit of Spanish renewable energy and engineering company Abengoa SA. In the short term, construction will create some 1,600 jobs in Arizona.
"After years of watching companies build things and create jobs overseas, it's good news that we've attracted a company to our shores to build a plant and create jobs right here in America," Obama said.

This is a snippet from the whole article, but I think its a good idea creating green jobs here in america. Debt or no Debt i think this is smart spending

smart spending no doubt.

the argument can be made how this type of spending should have been allocated years ago. All of the money being spent over seas, should be spent right here in the states making us independent of foreign oil.

I've been making that argument since the oil embargo of the 70's during Carter's term.

If you compare the cost per kWh of solar electricity to coal, oil, or natural gas you'll understand why there has been minimal investment in to solar electric production.

The technology need to be far cheaper to produce and more efficient at generating electricity to become a viable source of energy on a large scale.

And if you take into consideration all of the monies dumped into those technologies, a very small fraction of which is ever seen in solar- you'd see the costs comparisons getting closer.

Closer, but the cost to per kWh of coal, oil and natural gas are under $0.05 while solar is around $0.30. Something that's six times more expensive then currently available options just isn't going to catch on.

I'm not saying solar will never be viable, but it certainly has a way to go still.

You remember it? I wrote about it! That was the era when our Presidency stood still. He had the chance to make US independent of foreign crude.

And tossing money into crap like this isn't anything more than the Community Organizer putting on a show for his less intelligent followers*.

*Yeah, I know, I just named all his followers by saying this.

Any form of renewable and sustainable energy is a worthwhile cause in my opinion. Of course the techniques need to be refined heavily...but go back 150 or so years when coal was first being used....how inefficient do you think the process was then compared to now? Renewable energy is the future regardless of whatever you believe to be "worthwhile" as we don't have a choice.
