Wow I thought this was interesting. While I do agree that an investigation and action should have been taken. Firing all 74 teachers, 19 administrators and the principle seems kinda excessive.

The school is failing and it feels more like that this protest was used as a scapegoat to fire everyone and start fresh where as before the school wouldn't have just cause.

Thoughts?

Your post implies that they are firing the teachers and staff as a result of the effigy.

That is not correct. The layoffs were announced previously, and the Obama effigy was hung in protest of the upcoming firings.

I think you read the article wrong, they were firing the staff before they hung a effigy. The effigy was to protest said sackings.
I think it is wrong to burn, attack or what ever a effigy, its just for people to stupid or afraid to actually voice their feelings

I abhor collective punishments! But sometimes if all were involved all should be punished!

Relating to the article though - how terrible is it that only 7% of pupils can attain a basic maths pass?

Horrible that is. What would make a great study is to find out the reasons and assign them to the responsible parties. I cannot fathom that this could possibly only the fault of teachers. Parents and kids must be blamed as well, and correct solutions sought.

People can hang and burn effigies of the president if they like, but the teachers doing it is just irresponsible. They are forcing their political views on people who are not mature enough to understand them. They are betraying the children they are supposed to be educating.

I wonder.

Do the students come to class? Do they arrive on time? Do they do their homework? Are they silent, and do they listen when the teacher or other students speak? Do they come prepared with pencil, paper, and a textbook? Do they ask to go to the restroom as soon as they arrive in class? Do they reek of tobacco, marijuana, or alcohol? Do they miss school because they have court dates? Have they been arrested for criminal activity on campus; things like identity theft, grand theft, drug sales, weapons possession, or murder?

I attend a school with students who meet all the above criteria, except for murder. That student is in prison. And the district has a special school for these students. It has two campuses, one of which is in the county jail.

Thanks much for your input. I work with at risk youth at the drum I carry for. I get tired of people trying to put all of the blame on teachers. Most all that I know are dedicated and deserving professionals. Most all of the youth I know are in tight spots are could be in hard situations which makes attention to studies very difficult. Instead of blame, instead of removing all activities that allow youth to be kids, I wish they'd look for the underlying problems and assist with those. NCLB is leaving behind most youth.
