This is something that has always confused me. All my live I've been told that the part of Ireland that isn't the Republic of Ireland, is called Northern Ireland.

However, recently, I've heard a number of people refer to it as "Ulster".

It's something I know very little about, I just want to know. What is it called?

i am sure there are others who could advise you better, being from ireland, but as i understand it northern ireland is part of the british isles, though it mystifies me as to why. however, that aside, ulster is just a province of northern ireland that is predominantly 'loyalist', which means that they are loyal to britain and are not in favour of a united ireland. hope that helps.

Good try Wildething but your miles out.

There are 32 counties on the island of Ireland which are divided into 4 Provinces, one of which is known as Ulster.

Only six of the counties were taken by Britain following the War of Independance and the British called this "state" Northern Ireland.

I live in Ulster. I live in Co Donegal which is in the Irish Republic. Malin Head is the most Northerly point on the island of Ireland and is in the "South" as the Republic of Ireland is fondly known as.

Now you can see why people outside Ireland get so confused by us.

Ireland is divided into 4 provenices - Ulster, Munster, Leincester and Connaught.

Ulster is the 6 counties of Northern Ireland.

Donegal which is in the republic of Ireland is also in the "North" of Ireland but not in Northern Ireland which is goverened by Britain.

You will also find that Republican's will not like to use the term "Northern Ireland" and simply refer to it as "The North of Ireland". This is because they do not wish to acknowledge the partition of the country.
