Should they be stopped before they choose to strike our allies or is it all bravado like with what Russia used to do

what's your opinion on North Korea?

Let's see:

Saddam + No WMD = War

N Korea + WMD = ........

No war.

However, there is a big difference.... War with N Korean, due to the proximity of S Korea and Japan (in particular) would be very devastating to the region specifically and the world in general.

ANd we should cut back military funding even more. Then we can just sit vback and let people die, like a true tree hugger.

China is not behind them this time.

I don't think they want a conflict. The new Dear Leader is just trying to show off for his citizens.

North Korea is holding South Korea hostage. With Iraq, we were able to go in without much trouble. If we, say, bomb their nuclear plant, they might very well lob a partially-working nuclear bomb into downtown Seoul.

Big difference. If we thought Saddam might actually rain chemical weapons on Tel Aviv if we attacked, then we almost certainly wouldn't have gone in.

Maybe a stern letter from the UN will resolve this. Stern letters are scarey things.

Actually Russia did strike a lot of countries. But we let them because they had nuclear weapons. But it's similar to the situation we had with Russia in that us striking North Korea would result in danger for us and our allies. So unless we an be certain that such a strike would not result in a nuclear or semi-nuclear war and would prevent a future possiblility of that, it probably is best we stick to peaceful coercion rather than an attack.

Yup. North Korea is trying to establish deterrence.

Yeah, and sanctions and pressure does work - another thing we saw with Russia in their eventual fall. It just takes a lot longer is all, and sometimes people get impatient with that.

Anything that Kim Jong Un does or says has mostly to do with his struggle to control North Korea. And the Chinese troops along the Korean border could be there to stop Kim if he does something really inappropriate.

Exactly. He is a new leader and he is just posturing for his citizens.

However, it was brought up on our Canadian news that if, and a rare if, something happens and war is declared on South Korea, Canada will be stepping in for the side of South Korea and will then go to war if North Korea does start on South Korea. But that is a very rare if and very very unlikely to happen. He is just puffing his chest is I think the expression is.

I don't think things will get too far with this issue.

But, then again, as said, prepare for the worst and hope for the best..

I agree. While unsettling to see in the news a lot of what's being announced from North Korea, without Chinese support I think it's primarily posturing and being done for two reasons: to galvanize the North Korean people under their leadership and to intimidate the South Koreans.

I think a very close eye with diplomacy is the correct response.
