National Pride

What is your opinion on national pride? Is it OK, to be proud of your country, proud of your countries citizens, laws, beauty, anything? Or is it a form of prejudice and racism.

I feel quite proud to be Scottish and proud to be British, and I admitted as such on another board (a very left-wing one to be fair) and they said that national pride is something made up as a secret way of hiding racist views.

What are your thoughts?

i nothing my country, im not particularly proud of it, but im not ashamed of it.
it has its good points as well as its bad points.

I tend to consider myself more "fortunate" to be living where I do than "proud" of my country. I definitely recognize the positives of living where I do and I am very grateful for them. There's a negative connotation between pride and racism ("white pride" comes immediately to mind), but I don't necessarily think it has to be indicative of feelings of superiority.

I also think feelings of pride tend to come more from hard work. For example, if someone immigrates to the US and ovecomes intense social barriers to eventually achieve happiness and success, I think they should of course be proud to be where they are. I don't think I should be proud to be American just because I was born here, though, since I didn't really have to work hard for that. I'd rather become informed about why I'm fortunate and recognize that than simply claim to be proud.

ah Jmo, it's nothing to do with racism. a lot of racists hide behind national pride like a lot of perverts hide behind the bible. ..right?

A person can have national pride while seeing the issues that doesn't show thier nation in a very good way. If no had any pride in thier home land then no one would bother with trying to make living there good.IMHO

It depends what you see to be proud of, if you are proud in spite oppression of others! Inspite of making military aggression aqgainst other nations. In spite of crime and brutality by its citizens. Then I would suggest you should think about it.

The Germans were very proud of Germany inspite of naziism.

People should be proud of who they are, what makes them who they are - and where they were born, and where they call home now (even if it's the same) -- that can all be tied into being proud. Anyone who is successful, whereever they are, and however they achieved it - it didn't come without many hard-won battles -- which the observer would never know about or understand ----cuz they never walked a mile in those person's shoes. imho. 8)8)

American Born and Damn Proud of it!!
I Choose freedom , Warts and All .
I hear that there are planes , Ships and buses leaving from all points , around the clock ,for anyone that has the price of a ticket and figures there's some where better .

I've never really understood feeling "proud" based on where you happened to be born. It doesn't make much sense to me.
