The Nobel laureate greeted a jubilant crowd outside her home after being held in detention for 15 years by the country's military rulers. She promiseed to speak at greater length Sunday. The conditions of her release are not clear.

It's good for her of course, but there's this downside to the story:

Ms. Suu Kyi's release isn't likely to trigger major political change in Myanmar, an impoverished but strategically important Southeast Asian nation with extensive natural gas reserves between China and India. Despite being one of the world's most famous political prisoners, Ms. Suu Kyi's position has weakened considerably in recent years as Myanmar's ruling junta has fortified its financial and military strength through expanded ties with China and other Asian allies.

That may be so but it's a good start at least.

Here's a little more detail. That's one gutsy guy, refusing to leave. This may be the first real chink in the 60 year Castro fa?ade.

One source says that Arnaldo Ramos Lauzurique is 68 years old. That means he was only about 20 years old when Castro took over Cuba. We could infer that he did not at that time oppose Castro, which could be why he was not assassinated with the other opposition 50 years ago.
