I don't completely hate Windows...I'm using XP while Ubuntu reinstalls after that fallout I had trying to force it to upgrade to Intrepid...

Anyway, I don't completely hate Vista either, I like Aero..I was looking at that around beta 2.

What I don't like is this:
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
512 MB of system memory
20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
DVD-ROM drive
Audio Output
...and that is for Basic!

Anything else, you need this:
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB of system memory
40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
WDDM Driver
128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
32 bits per pixel
DVD-ROM drive
Audio Output

THAT IS RIDICULOUS!!!

Compare it with XP:
C with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

...and that is PROFFESIONAL!!!

But, it is 6 years old, so lets compare with Ubuntu and OS X Leopard

Ubuntu Hardy:
Recomended:

1.2 GHz x86 processor
384 MB of system memory (RAM)
Supported graphics card (see DesktopEffects)

Leopard:
Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)
DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)
At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
At least 9 GB of disk space available.

Still more compact than Vista... what the hell was M$ thinking?

Vista sucks with less than 2 GB of RAM or less than a Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that Vista is slower than XP or Ubuntu on equivalent hardware. Vista is impressively fast, and faster than XP, if you have enough hardware for it to flex its muscle.

Put Vista on a Core 2 Duo machine with 2+ GB of RAM, and you have a machine with a much quicker and better user experience and generally faster program load times.

In 2 years those minimum requirements will seem laughable anyway.

Aero is pretty f***ing ugly. And there's no way to skin it nicely yet...which really annoys me.

I was seriously considering swapping back to XP on my xps recently, but I think I'll stick with it for now.

That is beside the point. It is absolutely unnessacary for an operating system to grow 10 times in size and require 16 times more memory to run half-way decent.

There's just no way in hell that is logical for a few extra bits of anti-piracy bulls*** and some transparancy.

In 6 years, we've had more than a 10x increase in low-end processor power and roughly a 16x increase in low-end RAM quantities.

There's a lot more to Vista than "anti-piracy bulls*** and some transparency." It's a significantly different, smarter, and better operating system than XP. You should learn some stuff about it before you denounce it based on what amount to myths.

I swear this thread title said Visa.
I thought I was going to learn why not using it, keeps your fiances more intact or some money savvy saving tips.
You can imagine my suprise when computer illiterate me came in here and saw.

When it stops in three days. AND YES, I did use Vista (and I bragged about it A LOT, until it stopped) there is something wrong.

This isn't some 386, its
2.8 GHz Genuine Intel Pentium 4
1.2 GB of ram
160 GB HDD

and it took about 30 seconds to a minute to ask me cancel or allow, then another 30 seconds to a minute to go away. I also couldn't use Aero, which sucked balls in the first place, and I have 128 MB of VRAM; if Aero can't run on that, it's full of s***, and you sound like PC telling me that Vista can only reach it's potential,
gee.. what did PC say, um something along the lines of:
PC:"Ask not what Vista can do for you, ask what you can do for Vista!"
Mac:"Wow!, you sound really committed to this."
PC:"No, I switched back to XP 2 weeks ago. Much happier."

Again, you shouldn't have to upgrade your hardware for an OS upgrade...

unless of course you have a 386 or something but even then, watch this and find out how bulls*** Vista is:

A single-core 2.8 GHz P4 is a POS. Vista does not work well with that.

The biggest problem is the RAM though. 1.2 GB is woefully small. Vista sucks a** with 1 GB of RAM.

Which again is complete bulls***....as in it it is bulls*** that this fact is true.

Ok, so it has a lot of videos and a bunch of bells and whistles.

That doesn't explain too much of why it has to be 15 GB when Ubuntu can fit ITSELF, and COMPIZ FUSION!!! in 2 GB.

It makes no sense.

Vista doesn't take up 15 GB.

A Vista Ultimate installation takes up about 4 GB by itself. Add a couple of gigs for virtual memory, a couple of gigs for System Restore space, and you're up to about 8 or 9. The extra space is for additional programs, Windows Update uninstall rollbacks, service packs, etc.

Not a surprise, cGobla. With good hardware, Vista runs beautifully.

I'm using a machine I built in 2006 for $800, and it's faster and more stable with Vista than it ever was with XP.

~1 GB of RAM simply isn't enough. Vista really struggles with less than 2 GB.
